There's a pretty good thread on KW in a "sticky" here on this forum where a poster gives in-depth information about KW. Being a tourist there vs living there full time is radically different. Tougher to be a full time resident if you're on a limited budget.

Like others said, the Keys aren't at all comparable to Sydney. Sydney's surf culture is more like Southern California. A better comparison IMO for the Keys would be someplace in North Queensland like Port Douglas.
