The entire inland of Florida was mostly uninhabited farmland, ranchland, groves and other agriculture. Towns were one light towns. Drive down US 17 between Bartow and Punta Gorda, especially between Arcadia and the Interstate, that's what most of the state was like. Other places you can still see old Florida is SR 25 between "the lake" and Sebring, SR50 between Ridge Manor and Groveland, then SR19 (not US19) between Groveland and Palatka.

It wasnt that long ago (90's) that there was till seemingly billions of acres of orange grove covered land in the middle of the state in the area South of Ocala.

When was that? The area around Bok Tower is now unfortunately all houses, really bad houses too.

I'm too young to know, but I would guess most of FL was like the communities along US27 and 441. Sebring, Winter Haven, Tavares, Ocala and such.

Ummm, nope. I was born and raised in South Florida (Hollywood to be exact) and where I grew up (the more established east side) our neighborhood was surrounded by tomato fields for a few years of my youth (the early 60s). There were areas similar in both Miami and Ft Lauderdale. The big build-out didn't really happen until the 70s.

The first time I lived in Florida (Gainesville) was in 1971. I don't remember anything about Disney then. I went there for the first time when I was a newlywed around 1976. LONG time ago. Damn, that really makes me feel old.

Well you can blame that on your FL leaders for the last 40yrs. I have never seen a state with so much uncontrolled sprawl.

Of course when you're getting palm greased by builders they tend to look the other way.

They just got approval to build townhomes in my area where there are wetlands, they have a surplus of homes to last 5 yrs, tons of foreclosures, vacant homes, new homes that have never been lived in ,and yet the build more and more.

That's on FL.
