My husband is retired military. We've been Florida residents for over a decade. The commissaries we have lived near and shopped at are Pensacola NAS, Eglin AFB, and Mac Dill AFB.

We are currently trying to decide where to move next and need to be no further than an hour from a base with a commissary and medical.

We have not been to Patrick, Jax (Mayport) or Tyndall. Might anyone have any opinions on those commissaries and ease of base access? I might even consider the commute to north of Valdosta for that base if it fits the bill but still live in Florida.

Eglin has been my favorite of the ones we've used in both access and variety of products. MacDill has been a HUGE disappointment and a nightmare in traffic to go there.

We will be looking to buy a small house.. hopefully on an acre or more of land (I want to grow my own veggies) and will not live in a deed restricted area.. none of this 55+ planned community stuff.

I don't see much benefit from commissaries anymore - save a few $$$ that you end up tipping the bagger for taking your groceries to your car....

If you do a once a month big run.. it works better than a bunch of little ones.. twice if there's a medical appointment.

Although.. the selection among products has seriously dwindled in the last few years. I used to find things at the commissary that I just never saw anywhere else.. not so much anymore

The JAX Mayport Commissary has a great selection according to my neighbor who lived near there for awhile. I just googled and they were awarded best large commissary in the US in 2013. For good home/land options within an hour check out the Yulee area west of Fernandina Beach/Amelia Island.

Awesome thanks. Good to hear from someone that's been there.. The rumor around Eglin was that Mayport was the ship restocking commissary and the one at NAS was more for land-lubbers
