Hi all,

A little bit about me: I'm a 24 year old male, currently residing in Minnesota, looking to move out of this state probably this year (mostly due to the climate, but also because I don't like flat states). I'm a software developer right now, so (hopefully) finding a job will not be an issue, as long as the place is at least a little bit urban.

I'm a foreigner, have no family of any kind here, so that's, umm, "not an issue".

Now, even though I'm 24, I'm not big into the party scene (at all). Somehow over here, the moment you mention Florida, everyone thinks of two things: old people and parties all the time. So I'd rather avoid that.

Basically what I'm looking for is possibly a place to settle down a bit. I've been moving for quite some time (lived in WA for 2 years, then in Austria for a year, then in MN for another 2 years). I like skiing (which is likely impossible in FL), but I also like swimming. I like cheap airfares to Europe I also like east coast, or the parts that I've seen (northeast).

What city/town would you suggest? Anything else you can tell me about NC would be really helpful.

I'm confused about two things.

You don't like flat states, but you are interested in Florida, the flattest state in the Union.
You are asking where to live in FL, but you ask for info concerning NC.

?????

Sorry for the confusion - I copy pasted the thread from the North Carolina forum, because I'm not exactly set on state (much less city).

As for flatness, yeah I understand that part about Florida, but at least it's not as freezing as Minnesota, so I can ignore that part I guess.

Move to South Beach, wish I could have done that but I am too old and have other priorities in my life. Wish I had moved to Vegas, LA or Miami Beach when I was younger just for a few years to enjoy life and party but I was too busy slaving away at a crappy job.

No, you can't ski in Florida. It doesn't snow here. But we have beaches. You said you're not into partying, but you are into meeting people right? That should be a consideration.

If you're looking for a big city, surrounded by people your age, and want access to a good international airport? Then I'd just look into Orlando and Ft. Lauderdale. Miami doesn't sound like it'd be your thing.

Let me get this straight, you are looking for a nice coastal city to settle down, but not looking for seniors or party goers, correct?

If so, I would look into Boca Raton and Delray Beach. Both are very nice and safe cities to settle down, especially Boca Raton. You are situated between West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale/Miami, so you have plenty of options when it comes to job markets. The beaches in those areas are beautiful, you are near nightlife, but not overwhelmed by drunk idiots. Overall, it's a very nice place to call home. I used to live there and still have friends in the area.

Boca Raton is full of old Jewish ladies from Long Island, even as a Jewish guy I would not want to live in that city sorry. It would be like a Golden Girls Reunion. I do like Betty White thou.

They have two universities, most bars there are filled with people in their twenties. There are a lot of Jews, but as far as age, not much different than most parts of South Florida. The median age is 45 years old. Fort Lauderdale is 42 years old for example. I mostly saw upper-middle class families and college students living there.
