Seeing that I currently live in the highest taxed state in the country, with unbelievable welfare and medicaid problems......I look forward to the relief that Florida offers.......despite what some think, it's about more then the sunshine.........

Frank,

I consider myself fortunate to be retiring in another "high taxed" state, Pennsylvania. The taxes were/are high (housing costs are reasonable, however), but I believe more equitable among the classes than Florida. You and I can afford to move to Florida because of this structure in the distribution of wealth in our home states.... we made a decent living, sent our kids to topnotch public schools, and can now retire (with pensions) to any location of our choosing. You chose Florida.... I might choose Florida once some of these inequities/costs are rectified to reasonable levels. How many Florida natives receive our pensions, and do you think could afford to what you and I are able to do?

Once again, your positive outlooks are always appreciated

Or, how about people buy houses that they can realistically afford. A newly married couple in their early twenties making 40k a year simply cannot afford a 400k house, and they should be realistic about hat they can buy.

Greed, my friend. Greed has caused our problems.

Dear Coach,
You are correct in what you say regarding the similarities in our history. I confess I do not know that much about the economics of Florida. I've heard that the schools are for the most part inferior to our schools here, (probably partly due to the fact that I pay more in just school taxes here then I do my total property taxes in Florida) .
I do not know what one can do about the differences....I do know that I am active in our community, and plan on being active and helpful wherever I live.....sort of blooming where you are planted.....or transplanted

Income tax myths:

Most people on the borrom rungs in an income tax structure do not pay any tax anyway.

NH has no income tax (and no sales tax) and they do just fine. They do have high property tax but there local tax burden (state & local) is #49. Fla is #42
Vt. is #1. (hint: they NH, keeps a better eye on budgets).

People can hide income or show no income.

*************************************
Property tax idea: for "fixed income" & house rich.

Give discount based on fixed or limited income but..... when house is sold through movement or death, recoup tax that should have been paid on the profit that is made from house. Sort of a reverse mortgage ---

*************************************

Everyone is always trying to dump the tax burden on someone else other then themselves.

SOH has made property tax unfair - my neighbor pays $550, I pay $2100.
(I'm homesteaded !) imagine how if I wasn't homesteaded...
Some mobile home people near me pay $0.....Renters on the other hand get no protection. There landlord gets increases and passes them along to the renter.

SOH and unwatched budgets is why the property tax is high and out of whack....
