Great in theory, but Florida must first be based on a steady, diverse economy before we can get transplanted Floridians to stay long enough to care.

I will say that don't wait for others, take the initiative and start a group and be in the front lines and experience what must be done to achieve a safe community. I was part of one in South San Antonio, the gangs will drive-by and spray with shot-guns the Brook AFB brick fence.

Just think how many of us reside in our current home for over a year. In my residential area we have control, so far we are a united community that want a better area every day. So far in 10 year no crime what so ever in our residential area, we have a community watch program and we all are part of it.

I do believe that we must be involve, that is my point....If we support and take care of our backyard we don't have to worry.

BornAndRaised is on a distinguished road
I've lived and hung out in so-called "bad" neighborhoods, in Pompano and Lauderdale. If you use common sense nothing will happen. For example, I never leave something in the car that is valuable when I go in the house. In parking lots, I hide any valuable stuff. Breakins don't happen when you do this. Criminals may not be the smartest, but they are smart enough not to break into a car with nothing in it. If you want to live with your door open, with your kids outside on the swings alone, with a perfect little life where you deal with or see nothing bad.... DON'T come to any urban area. Live in the countryside for that sheltered life.

The House passed the bill Thursday.

Orlando-area representative Ric Keller said the money would give $100 million toward 50,000 new officers nationwide.

Keller said 325 would work in the Orlando area.

But President George W. Bush said he will veto the bill, and that is putting an Orlando 7-year-old boy in the spotlight.

The boy wrote a letter to Bush to ask him to reconsider after his aunt was robbed and shot in the neck last month outside an Orlando Burger King.

Keller read portions of the letter on the house floor:

"Dear Mr. President,

"I am very afraid for my family. Every day bad people rob and kill good people. ... Can you make the bad people in Orlando be good? ... I am afraid to go outside and play. I don't want some one to kill my little brother or me or my grandma," the boy wrote.

More info:

Santiago Valera, a 7-year-old boy from Orlando has written a letter to the president pleading for him to change his mind.

His aunt, a manger at an Orlando Burger King, was shot in the neck and injured during an armed robbery in June. Santiago's grandmother says this letter, written by Santiago and his 6-year-old brother, needs to be a wake-up call for not only Orlando city leaders but leaders nationwide.

"It’s not just him and just the crime,” said Arlene Rodriguez, Santiago’s grandmother. “It's a lot of crime here in Orlando. At a playground Santiago said ‘my auntie got shot’ and a little boy said ‘my father got shot.’"

Orlando police are still looking for the suspects who robbed the Burger King and shot Santiago's aunt.

1)-- I can't handle these 3 & 1/2 inch spiders and all the rest of the nasty spider types overtaking the inside of my house and the oustide of my house, Me and my pets feel like prisoners from it, literally. This also includes the huge 'Fire Ant' hills that I can't get to slow down in my yard.

They don't have Spectracide in your universe? It's the reason there are no fire ant hills in my yard. I also use pest control, which is why my house isn't full of insects.

((This **** is excessive. And yes, have Spectracide and Insecticides, etc etc. After every rain the front porch outside is 'coated' with little ants. Some people get tired of the constant using of chemicals (that don't always last long anyway) to keep all this excess of trillions of insects. Enjoy the high rate of repeat Cancer in the future. No really, enjoy.))

2)-- The most favorite and popular activity around here: are bars, drinking every day, and staying indoors bored to death.

So, what is stopping you from doing something else, besides you I mean?

((Doing something else? I don't do the bars and drinking every day, and if I could do some of the things I use to I would. But here it is'nt going to happen. Don't be so insulted Hun, It's ok that you don't really know everything about my area, as much as you would like to think you do. It's ok.))

3)-- The fact that I can not take care of or grow a veggie garden well because they will get destroyed by either super high winds (from almost every day, nasty storms), or super heavy downpours of rain, threats of hail, excessive nonstop population of 'plant eating' bugs.

Wow. Tens of thousands of other people seem to have no problem growing gardens in Florida. And you know what, I think Florida might even be an agricultural state, that grows food and ornamental plants that are shipped all over the world?! Imagine that!
Maybe "Florida" isn't the problem with your gardening, eh?

Oh, Thy Master of Know everything, ... so happens that it really is difficult to keep a veggy garden going here, I don't need repeat my last statement that i made on this. And maybe you should talk to my friend who also lives in this area who was a farmer from more North who also had to scrap his garden that he started to grow earlier this year. Seems, I know my area of Florida better than you do. Hmmm, hows 'bout that, eh?.))

Do you own a broom, or a can of Raid?

((You use your broom and good luck. And yes, Raid is great. Gotta love the constant use of chemicals.))

5)-- Barely no forests or woods to walk through, and what trees there are around and near here is impossible to even walk through, (a horrible thing for a nature lover that tremendously loved trail walks).
Barely 'no' parks. And you can't take your dog anywhere (parks and other places do not allow dogs).
You have to cross a bridge, after a hurried and crazy drive to get to one, and have to pay $4.00 - $6.00 every time you cross over one, just so you can get to a beach.

And you think the rest of Florida is like this...why? I've got nothing BUT trees and National Forest all over the place, replete with hiking trails, beautiful springs, lakes, rivers...and beaches too, of course. You moved to SW Florida -- if you wanted forest, why move there?

((Who the heck said the whole state of Florida. - And, I did'nt choose to move where I am now in Florida. I did'nt have a choice, it was a last minute thing, and had to be done. Don't assume on things you know nothing about yet. If I 'could have' I would have moved more North in Florida or to a few other select states, but this is how it had to be done. I have two relatives that are here in this area, and I had to move to this area. I did 'Not' buy this house, I am renting it. It was in the price range of what could be afforded at this time.))

6)-- No where outdoors to go to and hang out at in relaxation for the nature lover.

See above. BTW, what color are the clouds in this alternate Florida in which you are trapped?

((BTW, see above answer too, Thankyou.))

Seriously, there is NOWHERE in Florida that you cannot drive 30 minutes and be surrounded by nature. Did you try?

((Nope, pretty much, I described my area and surrounding areas by me, did I mention that I did not say that I was talking about the whole state of Florida? With the way gas prices are, owning a big truck (It's what I used for my jobs in NJ), and having lost my money and my job after having been with a Con artist who had a list of abusive/criminal history, travelling all the time to get to these 'passible forests' and non saltwater/non polluted 'lakes' is'nt an option right now.)) ((But then again, you new everything about what I was talking about)).
((How about you get more hobbies and get out more, rather than trying to cut down on me and think you know everything, eh? Mr sweet guy.

Well, **** happens. Thanks to El Nino/La Nina we have had very dry springs over the last few years, which is the reason for the wildfires. Wait a few years and it will change back.

((Hey, Thanks for the kind info)).

8)-- People don't have any fun outdoors (every one is either in bars drinking, out sea fishing, or stuck in their houses). ... You can't do bonfires and you always have to watch your surroundings and where you are stepping or walking (because something might get ya on the ground. Example: variety of huge spiders, fire ants, snakes, excessive amount of mosquitos, etc).

So you are a nature lover that is freaked out by nature. Interesting. And again, where is this alternate universe Florida where people never do anything outside? Downtown Miami?

((No, SW Florida, again, SW Florida, uhhhh, SW Florida. And, I actually did get to move from my first rental where the loving, bored alcoholics argued all the time, and it is now a tad bit better, mmmm quieter. What I witness around here is, a high percentage stay indoors all the time, either in bars drinking or at home. They are either stuck on drinking and enjoy nothing else or stay home because it is too hot/humid/stormy to do many activities outside especially for any good amount of time.))

9)-- No lakes to fish at, and if you find one, you cant keep the fish because they are polluted with lawn and insect chemicals.
And also you might get attacked by an alligator if your too close to a lake.

Golly, I seem to be utterly surrounded by lakes full of edible fish. Perhaps it is I that lives in a fantasy world? Do you even own a map of Florida? What do you think all those blue patches all over the place are? Parking lots?
Scared of alligators? Jesus I had them as pets.

((Ohhhh, remember my statement some where above. -
And, good for you, I could'nt be more happier for you.))

I use the monthy drops and don't seem to have any problems. Maybe the fleas in your Universe are immune?

((Maybe your area is a bit better and your house built better?? Hmmm, even my Vet drilled me on the fact that this area was killer for the flea problem. Never had flea problems until I got here. She even told me of how a few lost their pets due to a big ongoing Flea problem. But, now due to excessive vaccuuming and yes using the ever so wonderful Frontline product, they are doing better so far. Don't know my Universe here?, then you don't need to comment on it.))

I wonder why this never seems to have happened to me, even though I have lived here 35 years?

((You're in your Universe area remember, and I'm in mine.))

So checking before you bought the house or truck was out of the question then? I think I am seeing a pattern develop here...

((I doubt you are. Unfortunately for you, you really had no clue as to anything about why I am at this house, that i was renting, about why, and about why I had this particular vehicle.))

With an attitude like yours, they probably sent the Welcome Wagon down the street to the next house.

((I don't know about you, completely, but I'm known as very giving, helpful, and kind. Though when I got here, my neighbors showed me they were the opposite of that. Well, I am happy I'm in a quieter spot now however, a bit less of them yelling, throwing things around, but i don't have to go very far to see all of that)). ((And I'd take a gander that I and a few others would send the Welcome Wagon to you, in hopes to send you off to some where else)).

You, maybe. I think the rest of us can handle them, being that we are not afraid of leaving the house or getting rained upon.

((Good for you Hun, you enjoy the nasty people/teenagers, sicne you can handle and live with them so well, good luck and good riddens. I happen to love the rain, can even walk in it without freaking out over it. But, you can go ahead and glooat over enjoying driving in a nasty downpour that stops you from seeing anything. Matter a fact, a 6 car pile up occured down the street during the downpour we had yesterday afternoon. And I don't feel like writing about the rest that has happened.))

Wow the intelligence and respect here (In New Jersey you "DO NOT" pump your own gas).

A) You are not in Jersey anymore, so deal with it.
b) How smart do you have to be to pump your own gas?

((A) Hey, you're a person who thinks he knows everything, is brilliant, and can't deal with things some one else writes about that 'he' has no knowledge about, ... every one around you has to deal with that. Oh well.))

Unlike in your Universe area, a few weeks ago, at one of the little quaint bars we have around here, a Man shot another,'of course really over nothing', and do recall reading about that happening quite a few times before that also, instances of beating the crap outta of each other over nothing good too. And this is your business....why?

((Because they brought it near my property. Mmmm, maybe you don't know laws well. And, abusing

Actually I have lived in Florida for more than 35 years, including your area, and still have extensive family in SW Florida.

I have spent years there, you have spent 3.5 months.

Kinda says it all, doesn't it?

Your problem isn't Florida, or even SW Florida. You strike me as the kind of person that is not going to be happy wherever you may be.

Actually I 'Loved' central NJ, alot. Beautiful, loaded with lakes, parks, trails, woods, farms, backroads and so on. Also loved West Virginia.

This particular part of SW Florida is my problem.
Thank you.
