Ok, I'm sure there are no burglars in the panhandle. None. You even mentioned yourself,

It isn't supposed to be like this, I can't even leave my house anymore without worrying about it being broken into?

That being said, I'm very sorry for your loss of your sense of safety, and hope you don't have to deal with that again. That's an experience I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

NFL's Sean Taylor dies of gunshot wound - CNN.com
"Sean was awakened with his girlfriend and 18-month-old baby," Sharpstein said. There were "noises, thumps in the living room." Taylor "got up and locked the bedroom door. Before he could do anything, the door was kicked in and two shots were fired -- one hit him in the leg, one went into the wall."
If he had a gun and took defensive position at a bathroom doorway or behind a bed, somewhere to provide some cover, he may have been able to defend his family when the door was kicked in.
And for kshe95girl, like you said, you're a big girl. You've got the support and legal right to defend yourself. Rural area or not, police are rarely going to arrive in time to prevent you from being attacked if the criminal decides that's your fate. If I'm targeted, I'm not going to let them make that choice.

I didn't know that, the first report I read said he went into the room to see what the noise was.

But macguy....really, just leave the second you realize something was wrong and call the cops from the cell phone. Guys high on meth keep coming and have crazy drug strength. It is not your deal to search the house for them, gun or no gun. Thats what your taxes pay cops for.

Yea, thats how I feel. I sleep with one in my bedside table. If all my alarm does is give me enough warning to wake up and grab it, it will have done its job.

It's been about 5 years and it was pretty much the same thing. They came in when the house was empty. I have a feeling somewhere else I won't see young adults riding bikes through the neighborhood casing houses, I see this everyday in my area. I must have called the cops 50 times about suspicious people and there isn't much they can do. It would be silly to not thing living in an area like Fort lauderdale your exposure to petty and serious crime is much higher. Regardless, what happened happened.

that and get your self a Akita. A friend of the family had one back home. That thing was the terror of the block. Those are some of the most fiercely loyal and barbaric dogs i have ever seen. If I ever get a house I plan to have one posted up in the yard.

Can't deny that one at all. The last sentence is the essence of it. I mean I don't have burglars riding around bicycles in my neighborhood, nor do a majority of county residents, but the bottom line is, if your neighborhood has it, it has it, and it's a problem. And theres a lot of that in the city of Fort Lauderdale. I mean on the there are blocks in Tallahassee where you would find the same thing. But no matter what or where, crime is crime.
And about putting bars on your windows, thats no defense either. I was in Brooklyn (Brooklyn Heights, wild style) walking down a pretty nice block at about 10 at night, and I saw some masked guy with a crowbar trying to break the burglar bars off of a basement window. If they want in, they get in.
