Sorry to hear this but I am so glad you never actually killed anyone, as much as it would have felt right (and justified) at the time, I think something like that never leaves you. I think good people killing bad people is not that cut and dry to just simply forget about so easy and move on with your life after this would not be that simple.
Try to hang in there, its a horrible thing to have to go through and I feel really bad for you guys. I hope who ever did this gets caught real soon.

macguy glad to see that you & your wife are ok but that really was not the best thing to do going back into your home after you discovered it was broken into. You should have called the police right away instead you could have found yourself in a deadly confrontation. Thank those above that didn't happen or else you might have wound up dead, personal possesions can be replaced your life can not.

Statements like that are totally silly. It is like saying if you get into an accident on I-95 3 in the morning with very few cars on the road, you must conclude it is as dangerous driving I-95 during rush hour. It is not, regardless if you get into a accident or not. Cigarette companies tried to use the same type of silly logic.
The unique problem Florida has is two fold. One, there is a large transient population who are here today and gone tomorrow and will victimized who ever they come in contact with. They skip out on rent, pass bad checks, make friends then borrow from everyone they have ever met before skipping town. You would be surprised how many people they can get $10 or $20 from to put together a bankroll before going. Second, there are people who are professional crooks who come here intentionally to play their trade. You see them on the news everyday and always from somewhere else. It is no accident when you get victimized by one of them they are out looking for you.
When I was on the road I was in a zillion small towns. I would go in a diner for breakfast and they would all look up. You could tell they don't see a strange face in there very often. Very unlike anyone will hang around that town long going unnoticed. In Florida the biggest weirdo just blends right in, the place is perfect for them. I am sorry, your comments make no sense at all.

Macguy, although I wouldn't wish that that experience on my worst enemy, I think judging by that post, you have been living here for way too long. In fact, that post is just sick. I really don't want to intend this as something personal, I really don't, but that was really just insane.
What county are you moving to (I just want to pull up statistics, PS before we dispute statistics because Broward is a cesspool of human refuse and everyone here is a freak and living in a floaty dream world yet everyone is a burglar, realize that anyone with homeowners or car insurance is going to report a burglary).

The best thing I can suggest to you is to move to a large elevator condo building where your not living on the first floor anymore. This greatly reduces your chances of a break in, unless its an inside job. Even better if there are security cameras and people at a front desk. This is your best option right now.
Personally I don't feel safe in a single family house unless it was in a remote, small town or gated community, or very sophisticated alarm system. You are too vulnerable.

If anyone needs a "how to" lesson on vigilantism (sp?), rent an old film called "Last House on the Left" (I'm not endorsing the methods used in the movie, however)

Theres nothing "incorrect" per se. But theres nothing correct about what that other poster said. Burglary is so common all over the country, and if you think your escaping it anywhere, that's pretty delusional. But Liberty County has an incredibly low crime index... 617.6 versus 4,632.0 state 4,295.9 Broward. Now if you were talking about moving to like Leon County or someplace like that to escape the crime, I would say you are delusional, and a lot of those panhandle counties have surprisingly high crime although Liberty evidently isn't one of them. I just think that a lot of people get sucked into the "small town" thing and don't realize how much can go on in those little towns. 20 burglaries, but theres only 7700 people, but thats still low. And not a single robbery. OK, you found utopia, and I mean it. But that is so exceedingly rare. Keep it a secret.

The term "Small town" really doesn't apply to places like that. Most of these towns have a little shopping and somewhat of a downtown but mostly they are just places to live and if you want anything you need to drive to a larger town. They are stop offs between other towns. Bristol and Hosford are nice, I have been there quite a few times. I really do like it there but I also have the resources to not have to depend on local economy and if I need to get away for a while it is no problem. Someone wanting to live there and needing to support a family would have problems I think. They would have to commute to Tallahassee.
