We live in TN and are planning a vacation to Florida. Kid free!

We would like to rent a cottage on a beach in a quiet, artsy community.

We like to ride mountain bikes, golf and windsurf. Some nightlife is ok!

A grocery store and few good restaurants would be also be good.

Thanks for any suggestions in advance!

Naples is like golf mecca! It has more golf courses per capita than anywhere else in the world. You can golf on one of Floridas oldest course at the Naples Beach Hotel or newer ones like at Tiburon. Naples has a HUGE variety of resturants from mom and pops, to water front in places like Tin City, to very tropical like Tommy Bahamas to grand upscale in the Ritz.. whatever you need its there....

"The quality of golf in Naples reflects the city itself - upscale and well-tended," says Tim McDonald, national golf editor for GolfPublisher Syndications.

Try Captiva or Sanibel.

Naples has a lot of golf but I would hardly call it quiet or artsy and as for renting a cottage on the beach there, not going to happen, there are condos or Mansions. You might want to try Marco Island, great island to bike and you can get some nice rentals, maybe not on the beach but in walking distance. You can golf in Naples from Marco but will have a better experience staying on Marco than in Naples, it is the best of both worlds.

the best mtn biking in fl is reddick and santos near ocala but its nothing if you're used to riding real mtns; there are some pretty cool man-made stuff though like a 20ft drop in santos

The Cape Haze Peninsula and Boca Grande have miles of trails. Several biking clubs set out every weekend and ride around. Boca is a bike friend, golf cart friendly town with art galleries, restaurants, shops and beautiful beaches and lighthouses. Boca has an old railroad trail that is now for bikes, walking and golf carts that spans the entire island.

Also artsy would be Sanibel Island (near Ft. Myers) and the St. Armands/Siesta Key area of Sarasota, but not sure of the biking safely.

Wow! You've got some great suggestions already. My vote is for Boca Grande or Anna Maria Island.

Here's a pretty good write up of Boca Grande

Both islands are very unique and laid back. I think you would have a great time if you choose either place.

Check out St. Augustine, just South of Jacksonville. It's very artsy and historic. There is a huge golf complex near there, in Ponte Vedra, I think it's called Sawgrass. I can't speak for moutain biking there. If you're driving from TN then it might be on the way if you come down I-95.
If you end up on the Gulf side around St. Petersburg, there is Fort De Soto Park and Honeymoon Island for mountain biking. Gulfport would be a nearby artsy town.
And I agree with all the other posts. Those are all on the Gulf side, too.
Be sure to post where you end up to get some restaraunt suggestions!

We have to agree with GoForIt --- Seaside and the surrounding Beaches of South Walton would be our choice. If you have any questions or need any recommendations, we would be happy to try and help. Have a wonderful vacation!

Biking
Winding through state parks and hundreds of acres of forests are some of the most breathtaking views in Walton County. With more than 40 percent of Walton County’s total acreage dedicated to preservation, hikers and bicyclists can enjoy a scenic and enchanting trip exploring more than 200 miles of trails.

Longleaf Pine Greenway System
Interlaced through several state parks and forests is the Longleaf Pine Greenway System. Comprised of more than 8 miles of trails throughout different areas of the county, this pathway system stretches from the Gulf of Mexico to the Choctawhatchee Bay. Hikers and bicyclists can enjoy paths for the beginner to the expert along these quiet trails. The area’s vast network of trails provides the visitor with endless opportunities to view nature at its most wonderful times. From blooming wildflowers to the dancing sea oats high atop the dunes, the secret lakes among the sugar white sands, there’s always something new to discover.

Eastern Lake Bike/Hike Trail
A three-five,-and ten-mile hiking or biking trail loop in the Point Washington State Forest winds through a variety of natural vegetation and wildlife habitats. Donation accepted.

Timpoochee Trail
One of the longest and most widely used paths in Walton County is the Timpoochee Trail. Named after Timpoochee Kinnard, the most influential Indian Chief of the Euchee Indians, this path runs along Scenic 30-A, parallel to the Gulf of Mexico. This 19- mile, paved trail winds through nine of the thirteen distinctive beach communities traversing state recreational areas, state parks, dunes and coastal dune lakes. Open to hikers and bikers, this trail offers something unique with every passing season. From migrating flocks of birds to blooming wildflowers and trees, the Timpoochee Trail is full of surprises all year long.

Road Map, I came across this article and thought of your post. At the bottom of it is a wealth of information on mountain biking in the Tampa area.

Sports: Cruising, bruising

pardon the pun, but Happy Trails!
