We are retired, living in Northern WV. We are looking into moving to Volusia County & will be visiting in a few months. From looking at real estate online, property taxes seem high. Why? Here in WV, we have a 2100 sq foot house, 5.5 acres, and pay about $750/year. Why are real estate taxes in the Deland area about 5 times higher? Are the services that much better? Am I missing something?

Yes, no income tax, have to get money from somewhere to pay for the services that are provided.

I think it is just that your N. WV taxes seem extremely low. Much lower than any state in which I have lived. Florida property taxes are much lower than where I came from in N. Illinois so I am very happy.

Florida has no income tax whatsoever and property taxes on your homesteaded home are very low compared to other places.
West Virginia is pretty underrated but there are a lot of backwaters there where it wouldn't surprise me that property taxes are reflective of the general service level.

Thank you all -- I forgot that Florida has no income tax. Real estate taxes are very low in WV, but the state income tax is high - 6%!!

Volusia County has the highest property taxes in Florida. To add, and sadly because we wanted to move there, we learned of other issues that made us turn away from this county. Just do a Google search and you will see what I mean.

The property taxes are high for FL, but the cost of a home is low enough it is immaterial and then you get the Homestead exemption/discount if you live there. Not that bad at all.
