Most of these people on the forum have lived in the north. I lived there for 34 years. You are not telling us anything that they don't know. If the winter gets to you, go to Florida for vacation. They could use the money. Being depressed about the weather is not a reason to uproot your family without a job and try to sell cars to people that are in foreclosure.

Plus add on a windchill that makes it about -20 to -30. It's so cold you can't have exposed skin outside for more than a few seconds or you will get frost bite. If the frost bite is bad enough people lose limbs and even can die. Cars don't start. Just today I couldn't get my windows to go down in my car until 20 minutes later when the car warmed up. How can I get my coffee at the drive through if my windows don't go down? (this is why I like the old fashion handle instead of electronic windows)

Then you are lucky if your car even starts. You have to buy a new battery every 4-5 years because of the winters. You do any driving and your car turns white with road salt. They are using this new crap on the roads that's a liquid salt that coats your headlights so it doesn't even look like you have your head lights on.

Now, I can't honestly sit here and say I love 95 degree weather and high humidity...but...I would rather deal with that than the extreme winter for 6 months a year.
with the heat index of 110 degrees every single day from May through November and the water temps at 90 degrees. Me, personally, I would rather have the Portland summers of 75 or 80 degrees. My daughter went to USM for 2 years and we have friends who live there. We were up there spring, summer, fall, and yes, winter. Had to be there winters because that was when she played hockey. I know what winters are like in Portland, Me, and elsewhere.

PS. We didn't fly up there. We drove up from NY to her games, not just in Portland, but other colleges in Maine, Ma., NH, RI, Vt, etc. We enjoyed it very much.

We moved to southwest FL from Connecticut 3 1/2 years ago.

I miss the seasons. It's easy for me to say that when I'm waking up to lows in the 60s... but still. I miss the beauty of the snow and the fall foliage. I do not, however, miss raking and shoveling! It's hot here for a good part of the year. Hot is relative, though... I find 80-85 degrees to be perfect weather now, and 70 is too cold to go anywhere outdoors!

Jobs here do not tend to pay as well. Then again, there are no $500 heating bills to contend with!

The healthcare in general here scares me. I have had two very bad experiences in two different hospitals here. I suppose the hospitals can be just as bad in CT, but with the major medical centers in the state (UCONN and Yale, namely), I always felt well taken care of.

I have heard that the schools here are awful, but we homeschool (and FL is very easy to homeschool in), so I can't attest to whether it's really true, or if the schools here are worse than the ones in CT. If you are interested in homeschooling, there is a HUGE network of homeschoolers, and the largest convention in the country is annually held in Orlando.

The beaches here, especially the Gulf beaches, are beautiful. The beaches in CT are cold and dirty.

The bugs here are big. Very big. Then again, we had some scary wolf spiders on our barn in CT.

You can watch the sunrise on the east coast and the sunset on the west in the same day in Florida.

The days here are longer... right now, on the west coast of FL, the sun is rising around 7:00 am and setting after 6:00 pm. I remember staying after school in CT, leaving at 4:00 and having it be dark. Ugh!

On that note, I have had no seasonal blues since moving here... and I suffered from it yearly in CT.

The people here seem nicer, more friendly and open, and move at a slower pace than in CT.

Parts of Florida are definitely "Bible beltish" which could be a good or bad thing, depending on how you look at it. This is definitely a "red" state, and much of the northeast is more liberal and less religious.

That's what came off the top of my head right now.

But we've had a decent winter. Last week it was in the mid50s-60s. This week has been very nice to with temps in the 40s.
The thing is, at least in many areas of "the north" that the "extreme" weather does not last 6 months straight.
I can say from experience that the heat & humidity does last around 5 good months in SWFl if not longer...WEEKS of heat indexes well over 100...

No, what the northern states are being socked with right now is not in any way shape or form pleasant or fun, but...cmon...it is not constant
(though I do have to say that specific states in the NE have seen a nasty winter IMO this particular year)

To each their own It's great we have freedom of choice & to get up & move if we don't like shoveling snow or sweating
Again, I would never want to live in south Florida. Anyone from New England should thing long and hard before moving to south Florida. But northern Florida and central Florida isn't as bad. Yes, all of Florida gets hot in the summer but in south Florida it stays hot for most of the year. To give you an indication, the panhandle is in the 50s and 60s for average highs this time of the year. South Florida is in the 80s. Of course if I get hired by the troopers I don't have a choice where I go so if I have to go to south Florida I will make the best of it.

Portland summers get just as hot as Florida. Just not for as long of time. We get several days of 90+ temps and high humidity during July-August and sometime June and September can see 90 degree days. Temps over 80 are common.

Again, I don't know where in Florida you are living but you are exaggerating just a little bit when you say May Through November is 110 heat index. I have the weather stats to back me up. Just as I exaggerate when I saw it's bitter cold and snowy for 6 months in Maine. Although you can have snow anywhere from October through May so that's 8 months right there. But snow in October and May is rare but it can happen. I have seen it. I have seen 18 inches of snow fall on October 4th when I lived in Massachusetts. I have seen a few inches fall in May.

Here is the weather stats for Orlando that show it's rare to get temps in the 90s before May and after September...

colorado artist is on a distinguished road
Our family of 5 will be returning to Central Florida after living in Colorado for 11years. We have lived in MN, KS, VA, KY, GA, CO and of course FL. We also we lived in Germany for 7 years. When considering each move, we always did as much research as possible weighing pro's and cons. We tend to think of moving as a new adventure. This move we will be giving up 20% humidity and returning to dripping summer weather that causes my hair to like a poodle Whitewater rafting the Royal Gorge, which is totally the most fun I have ever had, will have to happen in conjunction with a vacation. I will miss the mountains as much as I have missed the ocean. When we moved to Colorado housing was much more expensive than FL and average wages were less here as well. FL forclosure rate is higher than CO so that will be a plus for us. We respect the hurricanes, after all, you can watch them for days and take appropriate action. Insurance and taxes are a given anywhere. When we arrived in Colorado our 3 children were all ahead of their peers. Although we really don't mind the cold... Gunnison Colorado was -32 degrees last night. This minute my thermoter shows -8 degrees and there is a breeze. We are really looking forward to Florida again...it will be another chapter in our ongoing adventrue.

Instead of giving my reasons in stats/numbers I'm giving visual reasons.

NE in January....

Dirty snow.. piled over and over and over onto itself... and the sad thing is I would consider the first picture not too dirty.. the second picture though, you can see that nice gritty really black slush towards the bottom

and snowstorm after storm..

also NE in January... Days upon days of looking like this..

OR you can be in Fla in Jan.. and look at this..

imo it doesn't really take a rocket scientist

what's another strong reason to move other than the weather?money wise iwould stay up here.but see me and my wife have learned over the years that money doesn't bring happiness.what brings happiness is spending quality time with your loved ones which is seriosly lacking.leaving work and going home only to lock yourself up in your home is not my idea of quality time with my family.i am not gonna put my family at risk, when i go the situation must be right.a lot of praying usually helps and god will know when the time is right.
