Sarasota's fairly expensive, but there's lots of places you could do fine on that money. Maybe even buy a house or condo from all the people bailing these days, it's a buyers market, (insurance is bad but should level off).

Bradenton's nearby, just check for crime activity. There's really rich and ghetto and tweeners. A little homework will go a long way. You won't need to commute like that either if you're smart.

Good Luck

I would go if you are going to be more happy. $45,000 is enough to live on you will have to watch what you spend but the quality of life in Florida is much better then anything you will find in the DC area.

I moved to DC a year ago from Boston where I was making $45,000 and now I am making $75,000 in DC and I was happier in Boston even though I was making less and I'm sure Sarasota has a lower cost of living then Boston. I don't care what anyone says the DC area sucks I don't blame you for trying to get out!

What would $45K get me within an hour of Sarasota? Thanks!
Maybe in some places in Florida but not in Sarasota! You really should try and take a visit there and check it out for yourself, it's really nice but on a budget of 45k a year I can't see that being done. My husband moved from Washingtn DC in 1990 and too a drastic cut in pay and struggled for years to make NOW what he was making in 1990 when he left. He left because of too much traffic and after it took him 2 1/2 hours to drive home from work yesterday he wants more than ever to move from here too!! We live about an hour north of Tampa. Good Luck...but do your homework!!

Consider $45,000 before taxes and you have to pay for your own health insurance. On frugal living, you still might manage to save $4,000 a year which, yes, is better than nothing.

At any rate, good for you SunnyDog, both for renting and saving. It can be done! I do it too. It beats being house poor.

In any case, it appears we all agree that the gentleman from DC will do fine renting in the Sarasota area with $45,000 per year income (I assume before taxes and no paid health insurance), while waiting to buy, perhaps, in one-three years.

What are average rents there compared to southeast Florida?
1/1 Bradenton/Sarasota area average rent is $750 not the best neighborhood

You will not find those prices in Sarasota or Manatee Counties and his job offer is in Sarasota...taking a salary cut of 1/2...what does that tell you???
