Default Must-read: Carl Hiaasen

Carl Hiaasen's column in today's Miami Herald is an excellent read because it addresses many of the topics discussed frequently on the Florida boards: slowing population growth, lack of economic diversity, stress on the environment and infrastructure, rising cost of living, etc.

Good news: Fewer people moving to Florida - 01/13/2008 - MiamiHerald.com (broken link)

So this is old news and we don't need whoever it was to tell us what we already know.

Nevertheless, the article did mention that, in some cases, voters have dumped or may dump incumbents.

So the real question and news is whether people in some of Florida's major counties and municipalities actually go out there and campaign and vote for change within the next month and the next eleven months.

Sun-Sentinel.com has a similar article today. I promise not to post it!

Seriously, the media here typically have such a "rah-rah" mentality toward the area's problems that I found it refreshing that someone would take a "tell it like it is" approach (although neither Hiaasen, nor the Herald, are as influential as they used to be).

I always love reading Hiaasen. When I lived in Florida, reading his books made my days more sane. I didn't feel so alone.

Also loved the "Pat and Rudy" piece. I laughed so hard I almost couldn't breathe!

Thank you for the link!
