I was just curious...I might pick up a car in the summer. But i'll be on a UK license which from what I gather is OK to drive in Florida on a long term basis (i.e I don't need to sit a test there).

Ask yourself, how do you get your License plates without insurance ? So as soon as a police sees you without them you will be pulled over.I have seen people who use paper tags in the rear window but inevitably you will be found out this way.

What do you mean by "pick up" a car? If you're purchasing a car, you'll have to get an insurance binder before you complete the sale. If you're renting a car (car hire) you'll have to purchase the rental company's (very expensive) insurance or show proof of your own before they'll let you rent the car.

By pick up I meant purchase, I was not aware of having to have insurance in order to complete a sale? I was thinking of maybe buying private.

they stay with the seller. a uk license i valid as a tourist license for up to 3 or 12 months. cant remember. you will need to purchase insurance tho. u can buy a car privately without insurance but you wont have any plates to attach as they wont be issued until you have insurance papers

U.S. license plates are tied to the owner, not the car.
I understand that's not the case in most countries.
