Great place, planning on buying a vacation home in the near future. We visit 4 to 5 times a year, lots of historical places, relax town, check the following site: http://www.oldcity.com/

We normally stay in the old town and find it very safe. This one is one of the exceptions were tourism can’t damages the town. I would let a local resident answer your question. But I find the town safe....

My husband and I have been researching St Augustine. Here's what we found. Taxes about 1.5% of price, example house $300,000 - taxes $4,500.
Homeowners insurance on same house about $1800 a year. Mild weather, schools in St Johns county are very good. We are looking at a neighborhood called Heritage Landing, beautiful houses, very reasonably priced, $250-350K, gorgeous clubhouse with lots to do for the kids, very family oriented neighborhood. They are building a new elementary and new middle school to open in Aug 07. Only downside I see, would be that the shopping is further away than where I currently live in Palm Beach county, but I think in just a few years, it will be more convenient. Good luck, maybe we'll be neighbors one day!
