My husband has been commuting from Grand Rapids, MI to Maitland, FL for the past 6 months and is now ready to move our family down this summer. Our daughter will be in 10th grade and our son will be in 7th grade. Education and sports are very important (both kids are straight A students up here; son plays lacrosse, football, and basketball; daughter runs cross country, plays basketball and lacrosse). Is it true that Hagerty HS does not have a cross country team. I'm a little nervous about the education at FL public schools from what I've researched. Some of the colleges that our kids are interested in are Notre Dame, Duke, UNC, John Hopkins, and Univ. of MI. Will Oviedo HS and/or Lake Mary HS prepare them to get into colleges on this level? Our housing price range is $400,000 to $600,000 and we prefer a friendly down to earth community. Any suggestions or comments would be much appreciated! Thanks!

This thread is probably better served in the Orlando forum. With that being said as a product of the Seminole County School systems myself I will say that the schools you listed are very strong both academically and athletically. As of lately Oviedo seems to be the better of the 2 athletics wise. Academically, both have very strong reputations and consistently put students into the nations top universities. Lake Mary is more of a typical suburban area and probably more diverse whereas Oviedo is something of a mix of suburban, country and college town depending on which side of Oviedo you live. The commute from Lake Mary will probably be easier than the commute from Oviedo for that's worth. But the choices between the schools just really comes down to preference and feel. IMHO you can't wrong with either one, it just depends on what type of community you want to live in.

Seminole HS in Sanford is more highly-rated rated than either Lake Mary HS or Hagerty HS and if they can gain entrance to the IB program would encourage that option. SHS has both cross-country as well as lacrosse, and of course basketball and football. About half of Lake Mary and Heathrow, part of the Markham Woods Rd corridor and much of the very desirable west Sanford area is zoned for SHS.
