Pensacola is pretty safe from what I understand. I think it only averages about 1 murder a year. Still, there are areas to avoid. Based on what you are looking for, I would look into the areas around the University Mall or Cordova Mall. They are close to UWF and PJC. Pensacola has a decent bus system for a town its size (the ECAT). But of course it's not Los Angeles or Miami or anything like that. The service is limited to 1 an hour, stop running around 7 p.m. and no service on Sundays and holidays.

You may have a hard time finding a house to rent that is within walking distance of UWF, most rentable housing in that area is apartments. For a house, I recommend looking in the areas of Olive Rd or Creighton Rd, which are fairly safe areas. If you can drive a few miles further, look around East Nine Mile Rd. Generally the south side of Pensacola is more slummy, and the north side is a bit newer. Stay away from West Pensacola (aka Brownsville), it's trashy.
