Everywhere I drive I see cattle in the fields around Tampa. Why is beef more expensive here than anywhere else?

Because the wholesale prices are about the same regionally. Otherwise the farmers or slaughterhouses would just drive/ship into the next state if the difference was more than enough to cover the freight. But the cost of doing business, like running a super market, is higher so the mark up is higher.

How does one arrive at the conclusion that Beef is more expensive here than anywhere else? I'm always fascinated by pre-set determination of what something should cost based on a personal whim versus legitimate market costs.

9.88 a pound for rib eye and strips at sams and Costco. Publix and the local places are about 13.99.

@retired11, with all due respect, why is every post you start about how expensive things are?

As @aridon said, you can get good deals at Costco.

I know that is the way it is, but even $9.88 a pound for any beef is a bit much for me. Which, I guess, is why we don't eat much beef. And I absolutely refuse to pay S6.00 a pound for lousy hamburger.

A good steak typically costs over $10 a pound, even USDA Choice which is about the minimum passable quality for the majority. $6 a pound Ground Beef isn't the norm anywhere unless it's GrassFed. The Fresh Market has nice quality in-store Ground Sirloin for $1.99 a pound every Tuesday.

Those prices are pretty average in my opinion. Granted, I'm still in CT right now but those are about what we pay if not more and we have next to no cattle ranches/farms in our state except for the local farms. $1.99/LB...I'll take that 100 times over what we pay up here.

Since u r retired, it may be wise for you to seek a place with a significantly lower cost of living. FL may be too expensive for your budget.

Isn't NY a lot cheaper? That might be a good place to move to.
