What will it take to increase the inbound families?

More jobs and lower housing cost...

Census figures show that in 2007, the number of people who moved to warm and sunny Florida from other states outnumbered those who left by just 35,301, down from 268,347 in 2005. It was just the second year since 1990, when the Census Bureau started keeping such records, that the state saw fewer than 50,000 net U.S. arrivals.

Well I think housing costs are really not that terrible right now at all in some areas. Jobs are a biggie all agencies are cutting back so its harder for peopl out of state to get jobs there. I'm finding this first hand

It's simple- no quality jobs+ unsustainably high cost of living=no inbound migration. Florida has actually improved on the quality of life front, with it's crime rankings going down and schools getting better (but still tons of funding issues) but it can't make up for the economic issues.

The pay was always low here but the cost of living was very cheap now the pay is still low and the cost of living is high.

The biggest reason people moved here besides the weather years ago was it was cheap thats what most people told me back in the 90`s.

The key phrase is "From other states". The population is still increasing but the quality of the new residents probably far less. Big difference between a house with a dozen migrants living under one roof funded by a bunch of minimum wage paying jobs and A guy moving here with his family from say New Jersey, who sold a business and is building a nice house and adding to the community. The quality of the new residents is pretty bad. Even many of those who come from other states running from one thing or other can be no bargain either.

More families moving in = more strain on the natural environment

I don't see this as bad news. This is much needed break on an already stressed system. This will also give some time for market corrections for housing and cost of living to try to reallign with the pay rate here (or at least close the gap).

Default Not sure if home sellers would agree

I would hate to be a Florida home seller if yours was the consensus of opinions. It would seem so simple if nobody wanted to live in your state. The best way to accomplish this ,however, would be to unfairly tax all newcomers to death, offer few opportunities to attain a livable wage, poorly fund the schools for their children, grossly inflate real estate prices. Oh wait........
