Do You Live In Cocoa Beach? (Orlando: homes, crime, bars)

I'm thinking about moving to Cocoa Beach, but the crime rate there does concern me a bit. For those of you who live there year-round, how safe do you feel?

Also, is Cocoa Beach merely a spring break hot-spot -- or do tourists flock there year-round? Either way, do you find that this influx of people affects your daily life in a negative way -- or are the residential areas far enough away from the touristy areas that it's not much of a bother to you?

I'm thinking about moving to Cocoa Beach. Any info that you can provide would be very helpful!

Is Cocoa Beach flooded with tourists year-round -- or does that only happen during spring break?

Cocoa Beach is not a huge Spring Break hot spot. We have lots of snowbirds down for the winter, but not so much that things affect daily living in a negative way. We have tourists year round, because of the beaches and proximity to Orlando. I personally do not feel we are "flooded" at all. Most tourists congregate in the northern part of CB, near the pier. The next most busy area is at 520 and A1A at Ron Jons. There are also a few bars at the end of Minuteman that attract a primarily weekend crowd. The only time traffic is an issue here is on launch day, 2 hours before launch and 2 hours after launch.

While there are some residential areas (and some very nice) north of 520, most of the nicer single family neighborhoods are south of 520. In fact, the further south in CB you get, it is quieter. The country club neighborhood is quite far from the "action", as are the snug harbor neighborhoods and the 4th street south neighborhood. Being a resident is quite different than being a tourist. Residential areas are just that...residential. The part of the beach we visit just has single familiy homes, so we do not see many tourists. If you plan on living here, stop by the library. It is a hub of community activities from music to lectures, to cooking and art classes. Visit the community country club at the end of Minuteman Causeway and look at the tennis, golf and swim facilities. Stop by the local coffee place, Juice and Java on first street north. These places are where you will find the locals. Ask people what they think.

Probably mostly beach/tourist crime. There are some strip clubs and nightclubs in Cocoa Beach that probably attract a bad element, but on the whole it is safe. The further south you go the less crime.

It is sad, but it does seem nowadays there is some type of crime in all communities. As Kwick Release said, probably some types of areas may attract more of a bad element. In today's society, it is probably wise to keep aware of your surroundings, watch out when you are in questionable areas (and stay away from them if possible), and take reasonable precautions wherever you are!
