Hello all, Looking for a place in FL for a four person family (2 kids, ages 2 and 4). We are stuck between Tampa and Miami areas. Which one is better?

I don't think Miami is a good place for a family, especially if you are not from there and have no family there. There are reasons all over the Miami board why not, but overall it's a pretty adult place, and the schools are exceptionally violent - more than I have seen in any other major city I have lived, for no particular reasons. Like kids setting each other on fire for no reason at all. It's a party city, with low pay versus the cost of living for the level of experience/education one brings to the table. There are a ton of bad things kids can get into there in the clubbing and drug scenes, and it's extremely superficial (on the level of LA where it's in your face every day in the media and lifestyle) which may encourage your kids to grow up with issues with themselves and what they have to offer outside of their bodies and money. I lived there several years recently, I liked many things about it, and I still go back every month - but I don't think it is good for families at all, except for those whose whole extended family has been there for at least a generation so they are all together.

I don't know a lot about Tampa, but it seems like a more family-friendly place.

^ well said.

And then people think Florida's heat and humidity is unbearable, wait until you get to Miami--just too hot, oppressive that is. I will take Tampa Bay any day of the year!!

Miami has its good areas and bad areas and if your really interesting check out Miami Lakes and Miami Shores or look up north to Broward as well as Palm Beach County. Tampa is your typical American city which attracts people from all over but not superficial like some people can be in South Florida.

It depends upon a number of factors, with both having good/bad areas and their own strengths or weaknesses. There are a lot of bigoted individuals who will tell you to avoid the Miami area due to the large Hispanic community so consider that if you're not similarly inclined, since Miami has many very desirable neighborhoods.

Since there are sinkholes all over Tampa and maps that show they are everywhere.....
What do you do to avoid moving to the wrong place in the Tampa area.

I would like to live closer to the west coast of Florida. Seems less congested and better beaches by what I've read. Unless there are other suggestions??? I'm open to feedback. (Nice feedback)

Better beaches, yes.
Less congested? Than what? Tampa is pretty bad in terms of congestion.
