What type of environment are you looking for in terms of city size and amenities? They are also quite different in terms of demographics.

Most of the gulf coast is nice for sailing but gets really hot in the summer.

Both! Live in the Florida Keys and never have to choose! I can see both every day from here. Then again, in a hurricane you might see both touch each other under your house... but for some of us the risk is worth it.
