We went to Motor Vehicle today to get our FL licenses and register our car. When it came time to get the license plate the woman asked if we wanted, "In God We Trust" or "Sunshine State". I said "Sunshine State". She pulls up a plate and puts the ID into the computer, gives us the registration and plate and I see the bottom of the plate doesn't say "Sunshine State", it says "Sarasota". The guy next to me picks "In God We Trust" and the MV agent says that's good because if you move to another county you won't have to change your license plate.

So my question is, now that I've got this plate with the county on it, if we do move to another county, do you just go to MV and get new plates with the new county or do you have to pay the $400 initial plate fee again? I can't even find the county plates on the state website.

I don't think they make you swap your plates because you are in a different county. Why would they care? If a car can say Sunshine State, In God We Trust Or the many issue plates like sea turtles, manatees, sports team or school, why would they make you update the county name?

Perhaps this is God's way of saying...."See? You should trust in me!"

If you move, you must make notification but you won't need a new plate. You also would not have to pay the 'additional vehicle in the state' fee.

My wife got the In God we Trust plates, I took the county name. The In God we Trust plates only have half the Florida motto. It should be 'In God We Trust, all others pay cash'. I guess they ran out of room.

Thanks. We're not planning on moving, we just got here, but I didn't want to have to pay the "additional vehicle in the state" fee. I wasn't sure if the fee was related to the vehicle or the plate.

Me, too. In fact, for some reason, I was under the impression that it was only rental cars that had the county on the plate b that was probably something someone told me like 20 years ago.
