Default Vacationing in The Keys

Hello All:

My family and I started to recently vacation in the Keys. We are looking to maybe go once a month and possibly for Memorial Wknd. However, I am wondering if there are times to avoid. We seem to get better deals as "walk ins" vs making reservations. I know they have their "lobster season" which seems to be very expensive....so are there any other holidays where we wouldn't not stand a chance getting a room? Is Memorial Wknd one of the wknds to avoid there? Are there any other resorts, inns, motels that you would recommend and we would get good walk in rates at? We are partial to Islamorada and Marathon as they are only about a 2 hours drive for us. Thank you for all your input!

we stayed at place in Key Largo for our honeymoon. It was called Sunset Cover Beach Resort. It was the same price as renting a hotel room only they were small apartments some with a small beach just outside your door others had adjoining apartments. Had a boat dock free of use. It was really nice and quiet. we went at the end of October and it wasn't busy but it is a small place so i'd recommend making reservations.

here's a picture looking out our front door apartment.

Here's the beach front place we stayed in

and the sunset

Do you remember how much it cost? And how far ahead you booked?

For us to stay in the Keys? Our room was 129 w/out tx....and its was a 2bd/2.5bth w/ a full kit and an ocean view, but the fnt desk said it would go for 269-370 during busy times....we got is as a walk in. And that's my whole pt I feel you get a better deal to find a vacancy and walk in vs booking ahead....and this was just a fw wknds ago when its cold up north!

Looks like bayside. Those old family owned motels and cottages were the best! I remember how inexpensive some of them were. That resort is not far from my home, I have passed it many times while boating in the bay. Just be aware that in the summer the heat and mosquitoes are INTENSE!~ You will LOVE the winter though!!

We paid just over $100 a night. It was a 1 bedroom apartment with everything you needed. Here's their link. the rates are listed on their web site.
Sunset Cove Beach Resort - Guest Amenities

we probably booked a few months in advance since we had never been there and wasn't sure how busy the area was but in October, there were still rooms open when we got there.
