I saw someone from FL post on the indeed.com forum about how "opportunities abound" for massage therapists in Florida.

Is this true? I've wanted to move out of the state since I was a little kid. (Hate snow more than anything) And I've been reluctantly thinking of being a massage therapist for over a year, and I'm starting to think I'm going to go for it.

Unfortunately, I don't have anyone to ask who I know personally, about opportunities there.

pfffft. Nothing sounds like more of a nightmare to me than being a massage therapist.
OP, you're gonna move to a brand new state so u can rub someone's body down with cheap lotions and oil? lol.
How depressing.

Why not?

I have my go-to message therapist at the Acqualina, I try to go once a week, but every now and then I miss. Let's say I go three times a month.

I tip him just 200$ per session, but the treatment I get is 465$, I'm not sure what his cut of that is. He drives a brand new lexus, and according to him has a penthouse Miami-side overlooking Miami Beach.

Seems like you could do worse given Miami's economy.

You did not answer my question, but I will answer yours.

No, I am not moving to a new state for that reason. I am moving to a new state because I have always wanted to, like I said in my first post. It is unrelated to being a massage therapist, but I asked because I am curious about how people in that field might be doing there.

To me, it would not be depressing at all. I'm a very touchy-feely person, not very squeamish or anything; It's my dream job. And, as for cheap oils and lotions? The quality of the products I'd be using really isn't related to the topic, but I will point out that, if I go out on my own, they will not be cheap.

You sound bitter, and your rudeness is not appreciated.

Thank you! This was very helpful and encouraging. I'm feeling better about possibly pursuing this already. Of course, I don't expect to get to his level right away; I'm willing to put time and work into it.

I'm a massage therapist in VA. I just wanted to stop by and wish you luck. Here in VA if I wanted to drive a new Lexas I'd be working for myself but even then it'll be rough. I'm sure my profession in Miami or Hawaii would make a great living however if you're skilled and knowledgeable enough.

Thank you! I'm definitely not looking to drive any new cars or live in a penthouse in my life, I'm just hoping to make enough so I could support myself in a normal apartment, and maybe a house if I ever get married someday. I just want to know I wouldn't have to depend on anyone else to live. I never want children, and hopefully no pets, so I think that will make it a little easier on me.

I live in Sarasota, where there are many licensed massage therapist, acupuncturists, and alternative healers of all sorts. I never heard of any treatment costing as much as the one quote above, the majority are working for a chiropractor or spa making very little, and that's when they are actually working. The highest price one I know is a specialist I see for myofascial integration work, his fee is $120 per session. He has 20 years experience, and was actually an instructor at the local massage school. The average is $80 for a "regular" Swedish or trigger point massage.

That said, if you are really GOOD at what you do and care about your work you will be in demand, but it may take awhile, and you would have to work up to being in business for yourself to make the good money.

Good luck to you!

At the Acqualina, you won't find anything for 120$, even on special and a garden-variety massage for 50 minutes: Spa Specials - Acqualina Resort & Spa on the Beach

Acqualina is quite a trek from me, being in Sunny Isles when I live in Miami Beach, but it's absolutely worth it. And the best and richest go to that spa who come down to Miami.

The true $$$ in this industry is in Miami because a lot of the tourists here have lots of money, as do the seasonal locals.
