Im moving to florida next year and have a standard poodle. I know i would have to keep his coat short and also have a good AC, but is there still a risk. I love my dog and i dont want to put him in a bad place. Is having dogs in this hot humid state safe for them?

I have an Australian Shepherd with a long, fluffy coat and he handles the weather in Miami just fine. We run in the evenings and then jump in the pool to cool off. I wouldn't leave him outside all day in this heat, he's an indoor dog, but getting out for some exercise is not an issue for him.

Dogs are fine in Florida, I used to go to a dog park that was full every weekend, even in summer. Some people even keep their dogs outside here.

I don't walk my springer spaniel midday in the heat of the day. I keep his coat quite short here and ditched long feathering and went with a sporting cut. We go for long walks in the mornings and evenings. On our walk last night I saw a woman riding her bike while holding the leash of her black standard poodle running alongside her, both looked happy as they went by.

Not too hot at all but I have seen some irresponsible stuff such as leaving dogs in cars. There are certain breeds also I wouldnt have in FL just for the sheer sake of the dog like an Alaskan Husky. But even worse than that is those idiots with 40 lb dogs in a 1 bedroom apartment or townhouse. If you can't afford a yard for your big dog to run then you shouldnt own it.

We have the same breed and will do the same thing once we move down. We will walk him only in mornings or evenings and won't leave him outside, especially without shade. Otherwise, he's always inside now so I couldn't see a problem. Just don't over exercise him and make sure to keep him hydrated if outside.

It's fine just use common sense - not left outside, exercise in cooler times of day etc. Give him a basic "puppy cut" not SHORT. AND NOT the shaved show cut type of thing. Leave fur everywhere don't shave.

Don’t cut your dog’s fur too short. I wouldn't groom his face shaved either. It looks nice but it's too exposed. Leave hair there.

Your dog’s hair is one of the things that helps to protect the skin from sun exposure. And regulates his body temp.

It's INSULATION. Like a house.

I'm a dog walker and we won't do "hard walks" mid day.

I'd say for humans it takes about a year for your body to adjust. Same if you move out of FL or visit up North in winter. You're much colder than you used to be once you have moved to FL when you go back to visit.
