Looking for a Florida town where I can walk to the beach, also walk to a safe downtown area, and don't have to evacuate in the event of a hurricane warning. Does that place exist? Thank you for any suggestions.

Good question. Yes to the first part and we have all come to realize that no coastal area is immune to a hit. There are some coastal areas areas that have escaped a hurricane but it is only a matter of time. We use to think that if you were further inland you were safe which is no longer the case as evidenced by our more recent hurricanes.

I was thinking, if I lived not too far from the beach, in a well-built CBS home with rolladen shutters, I might not have to evacutate. Is that realistic?
Can anyone name some towns..... walk to the beach.... walk to downtown... low crime... nice restaurants BUT not south of Palm Beach or Naples! |

This is Florida. Near water means low elevation. I have two words fo you....storm surge.

You cannot be within a short walk of the beach and not be in a storm surge area. Given that shutters and CBS won't help the flooding... only wind. So, you have to decide what you want. If you are further inland and have a CBS house and shutters you won't need to evacuate and you are advised NOT to. Loosing power isn't a big reason to evacuate. Loosing your life is.

Right...if you can walk to the beach, you're going to be in a mandatory evacuation zone for sure.

Did you do any research on the places we recommended last time? |

OK, OK, OK......... y'all have convinced me of what I already knew but was in denial LOL.
BlueWillowPlate...... LOL ....... yeah, it probably IS almost the same question I asked a while back, and I did do the research, so much my head is spinning, my back is hurting, and my butt is sore! I just had the vision of living & walking to the beach but REALITY is reality and I'm over it. The problem is that there are so many possible options, and I don't have the energy or $$ to visit them all. Perhaps I'll just throw a dart at the Florida map and fly over there. I'm gonna rent a house for a year while I attempt to visit all the suggested areas: Palm Beach Gardens, Juno Beach, Jupiter, Vero Beach, Melbourne, Fernandina, Live Oak, Leesburg, The Villages, Mount Dora, Lakeland, ..... and tha's only the east coast & central FL and I'm tired of typing already. Thanks for all the tips, I HAVE been taking notes! |
