Plantation is nice. It is an older area with a lot of smaller homes that have been added onto. There are canals that have ocean assess but it is a long trip to the ocean. Still it's nice to have your boat in the back yard at your own dock instead of paying as much as $200, to $1000 a month for dockage. I spent Thanksgiving at my nephews in Plantation yesterday. He has a house he got from his mother, (he grew up in the house) he is putting in a pool and building a new sea wall and dock as well as adding a second story.
The best deal is to find one of the houses that have longtime owners but kept up and mold it into what you want, additions etc. It is not so exclusive that people buy and do tear downs but there are still a lot of fixer uppers with original owners who either are dying off or just can't keep up with owning a home anymore. Some of the best shopping we have is just a short distance to the west, one of the largest malls in the US, called Sawgrass Mills is just a few miles away.

Heritage park a huge park is in Plantation. You will be about 10 miles west of the beach and the same with the airport.
All and all it may be about one of the best choices in south Florida. You are also just a mile or two from the turnpike as well as a few miles from I-95 making zipping around the county or even heading into Miami or the Palm Beaches a breeze even when it is busy. I remember when they were building Plantation and the locals thought "Who will want to live way out there", we all lived near the beach. Now Plantation is in the middle of everything, the development was ahead of it's time. Seriously look into it and don't forget about looking for one of those gems in the rough from an original owner.
