So I'm from Tennessee but currently living in Indianapolis, and have taken several vacations within the last two years to Tampa and have also spent some time in about every town south of there on the Gulf Coast.

Whether it was dealing with waiters/customer service staff, people on the beach, or general encounters on the street, people seemed a lot friendlier and more laid back than here in the Midwest, where people rarely talk unless they know you and where life just seems more stressful and tense. People generally seemed happy to be there and a little more optimistic than folks I know here.

Have you noticed that Floridians tend to be more upbeat and positive than people in other areas?

It was bad for a long, long time following the last recession. A lot of people got stuck here who didn't want to be here. I have noticed more optimism and happiness the past year though. I notice a lot more positive attitudes from migrants than I do native born like myself, even in my own family.

it depends on what part of the state. I find the more Christian conservative parts of the state are more positive, happy, and upbeat but the more liberal parts of the state ie: Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties tend to be more negative, and want nothing to do with other people

It depends on who you associate with, like everywhere. I suppose people in the Midwest are known for being more stoic/introverted, but that's a stereotype, and you can find many kinds of people everywhere.

Well, as a vacationer it's not easy to tell, right? You tend to go to tourist spots where service industry is their livelihood, so service people will be friendly to make your experience better and hence the potential for better tips. The other visitors will more likely be on vacation to relax and project that aura of ease. We aren't living there yet, but we don't usually stay in tourist enclaves when we're down, and we have many friends who are residents, but in general they're like people anywhere, some more optimistic than others. What I will say is, there is a common more relaxed attitude, as our fiends are fond of saying, "we work hard, and we play hard", people seem to make more time for themselves and slow it down more often than in the major metro areas up north.

Hot weather gets them miserable. And then throw on top of that the NY-transplants who are ALWAYS miserable kinda like SNL's Whiners.

I am happy and upbeat and have a LOT of happy, upbeat friends. And I meet more all the time.

How surprising to see liberal-bashing from someone with the name of Redneck Rebel.

There really isn't any pattern to those who are positive and upbeat, or for those who tend to be negative...most with any level of education have come to the conclusion it's more about human nature, which crosses all ideologies and/or beliefs. Lastly if any geographic encroachments enter the conversation it's pretty well documented that in general (especially on this forum) many more nasty comments surface against those in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties from those upstate, versus the other way around.

What I see is transplants from the NE (NY, MD, NJ) are NEVER very happy when you hear them talk!

Stick around long enough on here and there'll be a queue of people forming to tell you how bad Florida is.
Mostly they're losers who will complain about stuff you really can't do much about, such as the heat and bugs.
Then there's the Floridians who hate the snowbirds even though they're too stupid to appreciate how much they contribute to the local economy and keep Floridians in work.
But mostly Floridians are like people anywhere with the whingers whining and the vast majority of people getting on with and enjoying life.
Now pardon me while I turn over the steak on the BBQ and grab another cold one ...
