What city do you live in? Ft Myers here. Not good. I've been to other cities that do seem nicer. Would like to relocate but there are complications.

I am in Spring Hill, 45 miles north of Tampa, so same coast just much further north than you. Yes, I know Ft Myers can be pretty sketchy.

Ft Myers isn't that great, in my opinion. But that's just my take on it. It does seem kind of sketchy... It's got a weird mix of ppl too.

It's nice if you're rich, or a tourist on vacation. The beaches are AMAZING.

If you go to Fort Myers beach, it can be kind of trashy..at least the surrounding area. I mean, I guess the actual beach is nice. Overall I prefer the Sanibel/captiva beaches. I also like the beaches in Sarasota

That's more what I meant. I pretty much consider Sanibel/Captiva to be part of Ft Myers...

Another reason. Because these heat indexes like today of 114 at 1 in the afternoon with 90% humidity make life miserable. This heat and with a UV warning of 10 is not beach weather..it's too dangerous for my daughter to even play outside weather

We moved from Chicago area in February (we both had lived our entire lives in Chicago area). Yes, it's hot and humid here in the summer, but it's hot and humid in Chicago in summer too (just for a short period of time). But we won't have to worry about a foot of snow and -30 degree wind chill come winter.

As for COL, auto insurance was higher for us, but YMMV depending on how rates are in area you are in. House prices and real estate taxes are lower for us in Florida, gas is slightly less per gallon - but again not sure how Chicago area compares to where you are coming from. There is now state income tax, so that could be a plus. Electric is a bit less for us know, but water is MUCH more as we have to run irrigation here.

We do find people are friendlier here, especially public servants such as those at DMV, Tax Assessors office, etc. Post Office employees are still largely unfriendly and just as slow though. We do find that drivers down here are really crazy!

No regrets for us in making the move - we LOVE it here.
