Hi,
Any of you living in areas of Florida, that get bad lightning storms,do you use a surge protector strip for your computers, or tv's? Is this good to protect them?
Thanks for any advice.

I use my APC backup battery for surge suppression for my computer, printer, monitor, etc. The TVs are all hooked to a surge suppressor that is compatible with DirecTv, so even the co-ax is grounded.

Me too, we use the APC surge and battery back-up's got a fortune tied up in those, but we lost the TV, modem, brand new DVD, vcr, caller ID"s and phones before we got them,,(that was with 1 BIG lightning strike.) We also have the FPL surge protection insurance, it gives you from $1,000 to $5,000 of protection in conjunction with your homeowners. We took the $2,500 for,,,I think $6.95 a month. Lighting is a reality here, so protect yourself to the max, and come indoors for God's sake.

I have surge protectors on everything AND a huge surge protector on the outside of the house supplied by the electric company.

One time during a storm, my neighbors house got struck, it blew a hole in the roof and took out their TVs, phones, security system and so forth. It jumped to my house and caused a short in one of my electrical zones. Thats why I got the surge protector supplied by the electric company.

I had my washer and dryer controls fused once by a lightning hit. Phones have been fried. One time we had a lightning hit outside my office window, and chinks of sidewalk flew everywhere, even up on the roof. Lost the phone system with that one.

I am in Broward (near Fort Lauderdale). All of the peninsula is subject to frequent lightning strikes. We have power conditioners designed to protect our home theater, and appliances in the event of a strike.

I am in Jupiter and have lightening rods on the house; the thing FPL puts on the meter; Battery Backups and Surge protectors on all equipment in my office... EVERYTHING! And most other stuff... TVs and entertainment are on surge protector strips.

If we have a horrid storm I unplug as much as possible as I don't trust this stuff.
I know several people including a next door neighbor who have been hit and it took out most of their "stuff". One person had the hardiboard siding peeled backon his house.. the lightening went between the siding and the frame...

Thank you so much. My husband and me plan on moving there with in the next 6 mo. hopefully. I lived there as a young girl.

I was too young to remember or know much about the lighting at the time.

I will print out this information. I have a small fortune invested in my computers too, and it would be hard to replace. Sounds very scary too. I guess it is something you get accustomed too.
