I will soon move to FL. I want to live somewhere definitely not expensive, as far as rent, but not a nasty area either. It doesn't have to be so close to city center or to the beach, but not in the middle of nowhere either... I work from home and do my own business online, just may be sometimes i can find new clients for consulting in the city so i dont want to be further than 50 miles to a city... i am single male. which area do you recommend for me? is central or north florida generally cheaper to live? cost of rent is one of my main concerns. as long as i am close to one of the main cities of FL, less than 50 mile, i will be ok.

Housing budget?

You can find decent areas within all the metro areas.

Generally SE/SW Florida are more expensive than other areas.

Actually SW Florida is fairly affordable in most cases other than Naples/Marco Island. Fort Myers-Cape Coral has one of the lowest costs of living in the state.

Ft. Myers also plenty of crime to go with those prices, along with Lehigh Acres. Cape Coma (I mean Coral) is rows of cookie cutter homes and half empty shopping centers....
