Okay... I have to say something here... I almost fell over laughing when the Lee County School District canceled all afternoon/after-school programs because of a tornado "watch." This is definitely
not the midwest.
A couple years ago (in Kansas) my professor expressed to the class that she had just moved to the midwest and feared the upcoming tornado season. She asked the class what she was supposed to do if the sirens went off. All at once, without any prompting, the entire class said, "Go out on the porch to watch!" It was very funny but really says something about living in a place where tornado warnings don't necessarily instill any sense of panic. Of course, there are no sirens and no basements here but since Florida never gets anything over an F2 and I don't live in a trailer, I'm feeling ambivalent about it all.
(Since we back up to a wooded preserve, I'm more afraid of fire than anything.)
