Question Concerns about Florida Power Outages

Many news reports about yesterday power outage. The big concern was the power plant that was shut down.

Should the state and the electrical power companies explained how this happened, what are our risks, and are we safe?

I have experienced hurricanes in Florida for 10 years, but I don't recall a power outage like this one?

The Nuke plant Tripped... My hubby's Power Plant in Lake County FL had a large dip and then spiked for 2 seconds at 1:09 PM when the Nuke plant at Turkey point tripped.

He (the hubby) is nuke certified and works at a Gas Power Plant now, but worked at a Nuke plant in NE Ohio.

We still have no reason to believe that Turkey Point did not do exactly what is was designed to do (trip and shut down automatically)... BUT the grid issue is something else to contemplate. Reminds me of the trip in NE Ohio in 03 or 04 due to a tree touching and tripping a First Energy line.

Hey, things happen!

I never lost power during this outage, but the power goes off time to time briefly all year round.

The thing that concerns me is that I read one report and it said that the system did exactly what it was supposed to do and then I read another one and it said that two things had gone wrong at once and it in fact shouldn't have happened.

So which is it for heavens sake?

I wasn't effected because I'm with Progress Energy.

Although at the time we had a tornado watch and I had to wonder if in the very beginning something bad hadn't happened due to weather but then of course they later cleared that up.

Doesn't really bother me if I don't have power for few hours or a week or so like during the hurricanes as long as it's not frequently, yes the spoiled food and traffic lights are a big inconvenience but I love the heat and like to sweat, reason I live here. I feel bad for the young, sick and the old who need AC and power but I'm young and can stand it.

It does irritate me when I see people complaining on the TV, usually a 50 something baby boomer from Boca with too much plastic surgery, because they can't get a double latte with soy milk at Starbucks for crying out loud.

sunrico in the mid 80s there was a huge brush fire in southeast Florida that affected the high transmission wires that carry power to the rest of the state. It caused a massive blackout throughout most of the southern portion of Florida. This threat still exists every time the dry season turns into a drought although FPL now clears brush under the towers.

Great point, but can be expected that from fires and hurricanes. But we really don't know what happen... Systematical failures are the difficult ones to explain...

They just figured that out since then?

I come from Texas and they have LAWS about allowing brush to grow too high because it gets so dry and hot in the summer. I used to dispatch for a fire department and grass fires were common.

I have noticed that on empty lots around here in Volusia county the brush is allowed to grow WAY too high for safety. Maybe its just going to take Florida a little too catch up, seems like common sense to me though.

Ops: The federal government wants to know why the failure of a single switch in a substation west of Miami led to a power outage... This is going to take time to get an answer....

Well honestly doesn't that make sense that they would want to know what happened?

If its so easy for it all to stop then think what would happen if someone actually tried to bring it all down.
