I worked for the state in Tallahassee for nine years. I good metric is the number of alumni plates sold for the in-state universities. The Florida Gators sell the most.

Now, if one uses GIS software, there are variations as you noted. The FSU fan base is (in my experience) strongest in the FL Panhandle up until about I-75. The Gator fan base seems strongest in Northeast FL down to the central and southern part of the state. But there are many FSU students and graduates from South FL. Keep in mind that the other universities are UCF, USF, FAU, FIU, Miami, UNF, etc.

I have graduate degrees from both Florida and FSU. I say ... Go Gators!

That said, statewide, there are definitely more Florida fans. It's just a bigger school with a larger alumni base. FSU was not even coed until after WW2. That makes a huge difference in terms of generational following.

Since FSU has had more football success over the past decade or so, you may see more folks jumping on the bandwagon, but UF will still have the numbers for the foreseeable future.

As far as a regional breakdown goes, I think there are obviously more FSU fans in Leon County, but I bet every other county in the state is majority UF, even in the panhandle.
I thought your user name meant: FSUMike= For some, U M Ike (Ike is a UM fan!)

From my observations, just because UF is such a hard school to get into, FSU has more fans.

FSU seems to be the smart kids that like to party and watch football.

UF is brainiacs who may watch football but are mostly interested in changing the world or curing cancer.

UM is basically people from other countries who can afford to pay the international tuition rate of about $110K a year to attend.

UCF is the party school that everyone gets into.

When it comes to football, I definitely root for the Gators. I have been to many FSU games.
I also attended Notre Dame games. The best experience for me was a Florida Gator home game.
It just blew the other two stadiums away.

Notre Dame had steroid abuse (see Steve Huffman on Google). FSU football had those lame scandals with Winston and that degenerate guy who punched the woman in the bar and got expelled. Winston is infamous at Publix too. Notre Dame had a similar Winston type-of-scandal in 2010.

I also root for the Gators in basketball and softball. I have been to many of those games. I enjoy
hiking around Lake Alice when I came back to visit. I also ran that half marathon that goes around campus.

The only FSU team I root for is soccer. I have been to many of their home games and away games.
I have since moved back to Arizona in North Phoenix not too far from Tempe. I am back to being a "Sun Devil". I have a degree from ASU too (LOL). ASU does have a wrestling championship which is brutally difficult to do but usually did not get the media exposure until UFC rose to prominence. So ASU has elite athletes in multiple sports.

Out west, in Boulder, CO Florida's Alumnus, Frank Shorter, is well known in the Bolder Boulder 10k. He won the 1972 gold medal for the marathon. Shorter is now a lawyer and anti-doping activist.

FSU soccer was awesome. I was most impressed by their victories at a higher altitude out west despite coming from sea level in Tallahassee - hypoxia.

Dude, have you ever googled the list of Gators arrested ? They just had 9 players suspended or kicked off the team because they got charged with some credit card scam. All college sports are corrupt

Don't judge the program based on some bad individuals. Let's concentrate on schools and programs. I don't know much about UF but I have worked in FSU for two years. I love the panhandle except the rough weather, cold winter and burning summer, even in Florida standard.

Hahaha!! Urban Meyer had an actual serial murderer on his football team at UF along with a bunch of other criminals.

When Will Muschamp took over the the football team, the only thing the AD said to him was, "Clean this up".

Yup and will didn't really clean it up that well, but he certainly managed to screw up the team worse than Ron zook did
