I'm looking for an ideal location to build a homestead in the US. Priorities: moderate climate, low taxes, not too far from civilization. As a gay person I prefer to be as far from loud, ignorant, shotgun totin' hicks as possible. Are there still any rural areas in FL where you can get 5-10 acres and raise chickens, goats, the whole Mother Earth News deal?

There are a lot of places, but those that aren't redneck are overpriced. Most of Florida has poor, sandy soil and abundant insects, so farming is a real challenge. You would be better in a more seasonal climate if you like the "mother earth" style small farm. You currently live in NYC? You will really appreciate rural living instead of that awful city existance. The other bad thing about country living is the relative inaccessibility of high-speed internet. As for being gay I wonder how you can expect to find a boyfriend in the country.
