Default West Coast of FL housing costs

So...We used to live on the east coast of FL for over 20 years combined. We want to try out the west coast, but all I really know is Tampa and Ft Meyers. We want to stay in the 140K-180K price range and are looking for a 4 bedroom home. Also, we will be renting first for at least 6 months because we need time to decide. We have two small children under the age of 5, do not want a "community", want at least 1/2 of land. Jobs are really not an issue as we are telecommuters. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cape Coral, I was looking into that area. How do they like it? Looks like you can get a lot for your money...

You should try the North Port area (just north of Cape Coral). You could easily get a four bedroom for that price. There are lots of foreclosures deals right now.

We're 25 minutes from the beaches and I'm pleased with the school system.

There are some nice areas of North Port near I-75 that are less "community" like and that have some acreage. There is also an area of Port Charlotte, near El Jobean, where you can get larger lots and it's more woodsy/quiet. You can get a nice house for $150,000 right now... prices are low.

Port Charlotte, Northport are great deals especially when comparing to most of the east coast. Look up SOFLGAL who posts here regularly.

In my opinion, most real estate salespeople are , er ( how do I say this nicely), oh never mind you get the point.

They're the best I've met anywhere around this area. Very knowledgable, honest, go getters and will treat you right.

I've been looking here too and its at good price ranges. Close to the beaches in the case of Cape Coral at least a boaters paradise.I'm comparing SW Fl to Miami and Central Fl.
