Where are all the jobs coming from ?
I see alot of posts of people who are moving to florida. But where are all the jobs coming from ? You can get a job but if you are new to the area and have to buy a home how can you afford to stay here ? I would just like to know your game plan.
It’s a sentiment shared by many homeowners in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast as the once-sizzling real estate market cools. The median price of a single-family home in Palm Beach County fell 12 percent from October 2005 to October 2006, the Florida Association of Realtors said last week, while national home prices dropped a record 3.5 percent for the year.”
“An increasing number of home sellers are getting less than they paid for houses bought last year or earlier this year, according to Palm Beach County property records.” I would think this would affect the spending and in return cause jobs to be cut.

I don't know about other people, but we had a house in Denver which we sold.
We are hanging on at present but will probably buy something in Fernandina Beach. We have savings.
As for the jobs, good question! I think Florida in particular and the USA in general is in for a bumpy ride the next few years.

How serious a slump is the bond market predicting? Pretty serious. Right now, statistical models based on the historical correlation between interest rates and recessions give roughly even odds that we’re about to experience a formal recession. And since even a slowdown that doesn’t formally qualify as a recession can lead to a sharp rise in unemployment, the odds are very good that 2007 will be a very tough year. I don't want to be a doom & gloomer but is anyone else looking at it this way.

And don't forget that much of South Florida's income comes from real estate as we produce less than we consume. It's like cannibals feeding on themelf unless other keep bringing more meat for the feast.

Layoffs have been big this week. Home builders have cut jobs due to the drop in numbers. I have never seen it this bad.

Good Point
I am a an RN so if you have a pulse and RN after your name you are hired. My home in NJ sold for over $1,000,000 so when I went to St Petersburg and found beautiful homes for $350,000-$450,000 I coulnd't believe it. I will be mortgage free so I don't even care that I am going to have a 1/3 pay cut. I only have taxes and insurance to pay...which is plenty in your state. I understand why locals in Florida are fed up. Since I am from NJ I think anything is an improvement. I could never even afford to buy my own home. This bubble thing is bankrupting friends. I am just fortunate that I stayed within my means and didn't get greedy. I made a killing and am grateful. I am socking the money away and will carry a very small mortgage just for good credit. Being a nurse lets you live anywhere with great benefits. You won't necessarily be rich, but certainly will have security and stability.

If you buy a house at a fixed rate or outright, and have a job that pays the taxes you're a winner here. Most likely your home will lose value by the end of the crash, but you can always live it it and keep on working and enjoy your bubble profits. For you there's no way to lose so congratulations on beating the house bubble game!

Wow that's an awesome position you are in! You will definately love living here without all the financial stresses. There are some absolutely lovely homes in your price range. Have you considered Safety Harbor? Some of the neighborhoods up near Phillipe Park are really nice. You may even get lucky enough to get a home bordering the park/water.

Where are jobs coming from in FL?
Jobs come from the retail and service sectors in Florida, especially in the metro areas like Tampa Bay area. Other jobs come from telemarketers and call centers. The REAL jobs are few and far between and if you get one of the REAL jobs, beware that Florida has a "right to work rule" which is misleading. That "right to work law" really means that any employee can fire you for any reason, even if you have the wrong color eyes, skin, religious beliefs, too fat, too skinny, or just plain "don't fit in!" Real estate in Florida went from bad to worse in 2006 when the bubble burst. I am a Realtor who is now seeking other options like many in my profession. This next year will be the year of FSBO or For Sale By Owner which won't sell their homes either.
I like to take a positive stance and hope that 2007 will be a better year for all Floridians and the hard working people in the US. We will see what happens by December, 2007!

The Naples News. “The furniture business in Southwest Florida is getting a new look. Street walkers hold up signs advertising the closing of Spectrum Home Furnishings on Davis Boulevard and on U.S. 41 North. The stores from East Naples to Cape Coral are draped in brightly colored ‘Going out of Business’ signs.”
“Blame it on the real estate market that has sagged like an old easy chair. Naples resident John Munzenrieder, who has run Spectrum Home Furnishings for more than 20 years, does.”
“When condo sales dropped by 50 percent after the market turned last year, business dropped by almost that much at Spectrum, Munzenrieder said. ‘It’s kind of funny. Two years ago was the best year we ever had in sales and profitability and when things slowed down, they slowed down very drastically,’ he said.”
“Spectrum isn’t alone. Brown’s Interiors has closed after more than 35 years in business. A going-out-of-business sale ended Thursday. Though the owner isn’t talking about the reasons for closing, some in the business say they think it has something to do with the sluggish market they’ve experienced themselves.”
“‘There are some people really hurting,’ said David Dann, who has been the manager of Badcock Home Furnishings in Golden Gate for 21 years. ‘I brought this store up from scratch. And I’ve seen nothing like this at all.’”
