I only visited there. Quaint. They were having a street fair there when I was there, many interesting stands, great carnival type food, quite a bit of local art and an antique car show. They have an interesting historical district.

I would classify it as a sleepy Southern town, however, I read the local papers daily and they have their share of crime. Don't let looks deceive you. Most of it is retail theft and theft of property including cars.

IF you go, try the Catfish Shack. Tacky beyond believe, you could spend two days just looking at all of the stuff hanging from ceiling and on walls (license plates from everywhere!) but the catfish was extraordinary and the hush puppies were sheer bliss. Am moving back to the area (not Bartow, Lake Wales) but no matter how high the price of gas if the Catfish Shack is still there I plan to visit and sit down for a spell.
