Hi All,

Yes I know it seems like 10 years is a long time. But my husband and I are planners.
I want to retire near Ocean (Condo or Ranch Style Home).
He wants near a Military Base - with medical facilities and airport so we can do Military Hops.
What do you recommend as a compromise?

Check out Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach which are all close to Jacksonville Naval Hospital and Jacksonville Naval Air Station.

MacDill AFB, Tampa, has a "super clinic" - not a hospital with inpatient facilities, but family clinics, optometry service, but if you're retiree you'll have Tricare so being near a military health care facility isn't really a requirement unless that's what you prefer. The Tricare Prime deal is pretty decent for retirees - allows you to be seen by civilian providers/hospitals.

MacDill has Space-A travel but for the retiree only from my understanding unless the flight is going to an international destination (Spouse can travel Space-A international flights only is what I'm trying to say). I'm not well verse in Space-A travel so could be wrong about that. (curious will you both be retired from the military?).

Other areas to consider: Eglin AFB (Panhandle) and Patrick (ATL Coast).

I live in Tampa, but it's getting somewhat congested here. Lots to do though. I enjoy JAX as well.

Try the Jacksonville area. Theres a Mayo clinic in Jacksonville, as well as a large Naval presence..

I would tend to the Tampa area, plenty of housing opportunities in close to Tampa, with military base there. Just warmer than Jacksonville, and less likely to get hit by a hurricane/tropicals.

Actually Jacksonville is far less likely (1 in 100) than the Tampa Bay area (1 in 25) for hurricanes and the temperature differential is negligible with a 5 degree differential in the winter and gains that 5 degrees back in Florida's seven month summer with cooler nights. It's also far less congested than Tampa which already has severe traffic issues.

Again, you'll want to review both the Space A program and hops (who can and can't fly domestically) as well as the Tricare Prime/Tricare for Life program before making your decision.
