What is happening in Maui and sargassum getting on an Atlantic Beach are different things. Sargassum primary comes from the Sargasso Sea and isn't a problem for humans. Baby sea turtles will live in sargassum, but they have to swim out to it. Sea turtles don't use sargassum for nesting.

I was in Ft Lauderdale and then Key West last year. Seaweed was definitely bad. I just looked at news reports which have shown massive amounts of nasty brown seaweed in the coastline waters and all over the beaches in South Florida. They say it is because of heavy nutrients in the water and changes in winds. I think the cities and localities should be cleaning this up for their tourists. They will lose a lot of money if they don't. I won't travel there for a beach when I don't get a nice beach. That's the whole point. I am hoping to find better beaches along the gulf for my trip coming up in August 2018.

Actually you do not even need a storm. It comes in when the wind is from the right direction and with the tides. It goes back out when the tide is high enough and strong enough to bring it back out. It is natural to have sea weed on a beach that actually gets waves. Sometimes it gets heavy and smells but it clears itself out. Some areas actually sweep it away every morning for the tourists not caring what they are doing for the creatures that use and live on that sea weed.

That said most of the time the sea weed is not a problem on any beach on the east coast. I do not think I have ever seen it come in bad after a hurricane. After hurricanes it is mostly hills of shells that end up on the beach and the sand is in the houses or up on the streets and parking lots on the beach.

not a single seaweed was seen that day:

Siesta Key Beach is amazing! South Beach (Miami) is usually good too, depending on recent storms.

Not only are they full of seaweed but they are also full of red tide and toxic runoff. I would keep flying to Hawaii if I were you.

Never seen any of these issues on Slaughterhouse Beach, my neighborhood beach in Maui.

We don't have seaweed now, and rarely get seaweed in Ormond-by-the-sea.

Yep, seaweed is part of nature and we just need to live with it. Doesn't stick around for long. I am at the beach here (east Coast, New Smyrna beach, at least 3 times a week and it is a minimal problem.

I can assure you that none of that, all of which was years ago, is as bad as THIS. Which goes on daily and gets dumped into the Gulf and Atlantic Florida coasts.
