I personally like Greenville more, but if I were to live in TN, Knoxville and surrounding area would be my first choice too! Knoxville is doing better unemployment-wise. I'm still not sure (I could have looked it up by now) if SC has a state income tax or not...
...(I just checked, and SC does have a state income tax)...

Greenville, SC is underrated in my opinion. It is probably the only place in SC that I would consider living in. It is nice, clean, and is a medium size city. Not too far from Asheville, within a few hours from Charlotte and Atlanta.

Yup, Greenville is located equidistant to Charlotte and Atlanta - somewhere around 100 miles or so to each one.
I dunno, I am kind of partial to Western NC too though. Greenville is hilly and you can see the mountains, but it's not in the mountains (but very close). Something about Western NC I like is the feeling of being surrounded by mountains. And renting a house like this for $800/mo - 1800 sq ft, 2 yrs old, and being surrounded by mountains.

PS - I dont know if I'd say Greenville is underrated though. It's getting a lot of "best place to live" and "best place to retire" talk lately. Especially the last couple years b/c their economy is still strong and the value of houses actually went up (and have been) while other cities throughout the US have been in decline.

Other than the ridiculous weather, Florida has become depressingly right wing. St. Petersburg just elected a mayor who strongly believes that the Earth is only 5000 years old and that man and dinosaurs existed at the same time. Go figure. I've got a few more years before retirement and then good-bye. Florida will rot your brain.

Yet another transplant from Chicago relocating to FL to enter the public service sector. Don't blame FL for his beliefs.

The magic of America is that it has a place foe everyone's tastes...
I chose FL to emigrate because of the weather, first & firemost...
People who regard weather as their primary demand ,will find paradise in SoFl...
People who are ideologues & want primarily to find political brotherhood can relocate to specific places & communities...
A person/family with my criteria, would leave FL reluctantly, only if he/she/they find a place where they can have 50% higher NET income, after all taxes & all expenses ( mortgage,rent)...
If they get a killler offer & a "once in a lifetime " opportunity.
( Always reminiscing their past Januaries in shortsleeves...)

Everyone has their own reasons to move to a certain place. I however, find that moving to South FL due to weather is a bad reason, but that's me.
If you like the heat and humidity that S FL has, then more power to you, but saying the people whose primary reason to relocate is for weather "will find South FL as paradise" is a pretty strong assumption I think. I think most people (people in the other 49 states) would disagree in fact.

Wrong, my friend. We regard weather as our primary demand, and we're picking up and moving to western NC, because for us the weather there is paradise....

I absolutely agree. Me, a FL native, and many of my family members have been in S FL and FL for years, and although I havent had the conversation with everyone in my family, I think most do not think FL's weather is paradise at all.
But like Jellobiafra, I find Western NC weather to be better. Mild winters with a little snow but not enough to be a pain in the butt, cooler summers that last from May through early Sept., nice fall and a nice spring.
