This sounds like a weird question, but do the usually small or non-existent waves on the panhandle and west coast pick up in the colder months? I've heard it can be quite variable, but is generally rougher then. I assume it's pretty consistent on the coast all year.

Gets rough offshore where i fish 40 to 100 miles. But nothing worth surfing on the beach on the west coast.

Also the water is cold too up in north FL in the winter. Not in the upper 60s like here in SWFL.

So is it mostly very calm? I've vacationed on the gulf when it was just like a small lake or swimming pool. Yawn! I love the big cities on the west coast (am looking for a retirement destination), but to me the crashing surf is what beachfront living is all about. I'd heard reports -- and even seen pictures -- of bigger surf in the panhandle and just wondered how and when that happens! I guess either preceding or following a strong weather system, but it's not the norm. Then someone suggested it's rougher in the winter months, so I had hope. But guess not? Thanks!

Nope, the Gulf is calm except before/during storms. If you want big waves you need the ocean.
