I don't mind Christmas in Florida. It's usually around the coldest time.

Our first Christmas in Florida we were bound and determined to go swimming. We did. We laughed at people walking around with coats and hats.

No more. Now we wear coats.

I remember a radio announcer one Christmas Eve telling everyone to sit down because the temperature was 42 degrees. And one year, it was so cold, FPL was having rolling blackouts and telling everyone not to use their ovens because of the strain on the electrical grid. That was from people using heat.

This was one of the reasons I moved away.. Never saw snow till i was 24. Parents never took me up north to see snow although I begged them every year. My husband missed the snow terribly so it was a mutual decision. All my family who moved there complain that it doesn't feel like Christmas in South Fla. and I was sick of the old people writing to the Naples Daily News complaining that people were saying Merry Christmas instead of Happy Holidays and that they were offended. Give me a break

I don't think I saw snow until I was about 5 years old, my parents took me to Yosemite. But it did once snow in Palo Alto, I remember it was a huge deal.
But then, after years in New York and Colorado, I later got my fill of snow.
Half the time we didn't have a white Christmas, anyway.
It was just cold and brown for December 25, then dumped inches upon inches in March.
I'll take the green Christmas, thank you very much.

This will be a different Christmas for the wife and I.......our first spent in Florida......our first with no kids, no snow, etc....

I'm used to the family picking and tagging our Christmas tree in Sept, cutting it the weekend after Thanksgiving.......always a big Douglas Fir.

I don't know what we will be doing this year. Can you even get real trees in Florida, and are they the least bit fresh ?

I guess that life is full of trade-offs, and that is one thing I guess will not happen anymore.....along with salty cars, snowblowers, ice dams on the roof, huge icicles hanging off your gutters, rock salt on your walks, slush, etc.

It will be a different Christmas this year......

Frank D.

As a new resident, we celebrated our first christmas here last year. Being cooped up in a dump apartment was bad enough. We didnt even have room for decorations--I missed the snow terribly. I have to say though, The holiday season is the only time I miss it.. Thanksgiving days were blustery and cold, Christmas was freeezing, once New Years eve passes Im done! A Halloween costume that doesnt have to be worn over a snowsuit is a blessing! I think it will take some time, I know my husband loves Christmas day in his shorts and cabana shirt!

Ahh Frank, this will open your eyes to a whole new world~! This will be our second Christmas and it does take some adjusting.. We catch up on the Chicago weather on WGN and more times than none we can GLOAT about our gorgeous weather! No blizzards, slush or sleety nights, no streets of solid ice! STREETS OF ICE?? Who chooses to deal with that?? The gray cool days were the worst and are not missed at all-- although its odd to say, "its crappy out!" when its 60 and partly cloudy.. HA- thats a Gorgeous Chicago day!

We did our time up north. Snow is pretty for a day, then it gets mushy, slushy, dirty, refreezes to black ice. Months on end with no leaves and gray skies. Someone always having a cold or flu. That dull ache in your joints. The constant dry skin and runny nose.

No thanks. I will gladly take a pass on the white Christmas.

i've never had a white christmas so my family kind of improvises. we go to the beach and try to make sandmen and sand angels and have sand ball fights. they don't normally hold up too well, but it's still pretty entertaining.

so, calvin and hobbes doesn't accurately portray the white christmas, huh?

I remember Christmas of 82 in Fort Lauderdale. Went to my parents house for the day on christmas eve and had family from up north there. Had a great day. We all decided to spend Christmas day at my parents house and exchange gifts.
So I went home to my apartment to find someone had broke in that day and stole all the presents I had for everyone. Also got my stereo system I had alot of money invested in.
Should not have that problem this year, my 2 Rottweilers are on gaurd duty now and Christmas will be in Georgetown Tn.
All the family has moved to Northern Georgia and Tenneessee, so no trips to the airport before Christmas.
Probably won't be any snow, but should be cooler weather.
