Perry. FL
We are planning on moving from Minnesota to Florida and are looking at a property in Perry. I was wondering what kind of town it is since we haven't been there yet. We are used to living in a small town without much for a major city closer than an hour away so that isn't a problem. We have been many other places in Florida but not Perry so I have no idea what kind of town it is. Some other properties we have looked at are in the lake city area which we have been to and liked.

I lived in Perry for about 5 years. It was a nice quiet little town. We moved from Miami, so it was a big change. It took some adjusting, but I still call it home. I have been moved away from there now about 5 years. The people are very friendly. You said you are from a small town already, so you know how people can be. Always in your business. There is not much to do there. I don't know if you have children, or what your ages are. There are many churches if that is your thing. There was a skating rink for the kids. It was open on the weekends and Wednesday nights only. There were quite a few fights there last I was there with my kids. There is a movie theater which also keeps very strange hours. There were quite a few bars. THERE IS ALOT OF DRUGS! ALOT. I bought my first home there. It was a 3 bedroom 1 bath house for $35,000. There is not much in the way of work. Still I call it home. Pouncey's restaurant has the best club sandwich I have ever had. The bbq reataurant is wonderful. There is also a place downtown across from the courthouse called Rosehead junction. They have the best potato salad. Every year in Perry, is the Forest Festival. It's a huge deal. They have the worlds largest free fish fry. So much fun. They also have a cracker museum. Check it out. If you want to know anything else, please don't hesitate to e-mail me....I would be more than glad to tell you about it. About any neighborhoods that I can tell you about. Oh word of advise...there is an odor to the town sometimes. Buckeye paper mill is in the town, and at times it stinks! Fair warning. Don't let that scare you off though. Keaton Beach is very close.

Bright lights not our dream...
I am a native of Port St. Joe, FL some 80+ miles from Perry.I have lived in Jacksonville, FL for almost 10 years. People not raised in small towns don't understand. I have visited Perry quite often throughout my life and was even fortunate enough to marry someone from there, even though we had to move away to work once we graduated college. That was our choice.Funny things is, we plan to retire to Taylor County, specifically to Cedar Island. We don't want to rock our rocking chairs in some "retirement home," we want to be where we can smell salt air-and maybe a little Buckeye, go fish and scallop and know our neighbors. You don't get that in big cities. Traffic, crime, high prices not big motivators. We plan to head west the day after our son graduates high school-10 years from now. God willing, the developers will leave Keaton and Cedar Island alone. Our property values on our two lots have skyrocketed since people "discovered" our little secret. When I share my retirement plans with people in the big city, they are so envious of our opportunities. Sure, things change-even in Perry. I love the niceness of the people that has been in evidence on any visit I have made there. Love the Forestry Festival, scallop season, sunsets in summer, Pouncey's, McDonalds, that good Goodman's BBQ, even those bagged and boiled peanuts at the Gas and Grill on the beach road.Want to see worse change? Head to Port St. Joe-no paper mill, multiple foreclosures, big developments that people AREN'T buying. Then you tell me how bad things are.

I have recently relocated to Perry. I have read some responses and to tell you the honest truth, I am a newby myself, it is a quite small friendly town. Others have posted some negative things but in all honesty, ALL towns have issues. This area is more of a Mayberry type area. It has great people, nice , friendly and NOT at all a busy area.
I have been welcomed and been helped in many ways since my arrival. I orignally grew up in a similar town, but it wanted to grow and became "busy". It has now become a burned out area with businesses and stores that are empty and the attitude of the town and people have gone sour.
The people and town seems to stay at a small town level. Growth is minamal and managable. Yes bigger towns are within 40-45 mins. away, and that is fine by me. If you want to be in a less stressful enviroment, by all means come. If you feel that you can't go with out all the hustle and bustle, then don't. I have yet to be run over, by or pushed by a road hog since I arrived. I have not met any homeless people here, I have not felt unsafe to go out of my comfort area or at night. In all I would tell anyone who wants to be refreshed in life to come. The cost of living is very managable. The local businesses are friendly and bend over backwards to help and assist with out haveing that "what do you want" atmosphere. My stresslevel has greatly decreased since I have arrived. I have the same type of work that I had previously, but not the stress. Come enjoy a part of a fading type of town, one we all should enjoy.

Quality of life depends on the person themself. The "Quality of Life " in Perry is good. It all depends on what you define as "quality".
