Sink Holes
OMG! Another thing to consider when searching for my "dream location". It has recently come to my attention that a couple of Florida areas are prone to SINK HOLES.
Could anyone elaborate on this........... what cities, towns, areas are known to produce sink holes and therefore are more costly to insure, if they are even insurable ? Thank you for all answers.

Most of the sinkholes in Florida occur in the Tampa, Orlando, Ocala area.
This link is to a map of where most of the sink holes have occured. http://www.dep.state.fl.us/geology/g...ole_poster.pdf
A friend of mine, her parents bought a house in Safety Harbour 10 years ago and 5 years ago, they found out their home was on a sink hole. They had to put pilings under the house and the pool. So now their home is like on stilts, yet driving past the home you would never know looks just like the other homes not on pilings.

Sinkholes
Hernado and Pasco Counties........Citizens no longer writes policies with sinkhole coverage in these two counties, they have an option that you can add it back on for $$$.

Deltona is the only area that I have heard of sinkholes in Central Florida. They are known for their flooding problems too though.

You could always have your dream location lot checked but you can’t be sure you will never get one. It is a very unlikely problem; I would be more worried about the hurricanes.

Yes, sinkholes are out there.....but statistically I do not think it is something to worry about.
They ARE covered on my homeowners policy.
There are always risks in life.....either the weather, earthquakes, mudslides, dams breaking miles away, nuclear power plants, TONs of has-mat waste and dangerous chemicals driving right next to you daily and through your town, etc, etc.
As a wise person recently told me there is a bigger danger in WORRYING about this stuff then the stuff itself.

I have to agree with Faithful. If you spend 2 minutes of concern for a sinkhole, you wasted 2 mins of your life. The event happens because the water beneath the ground has dropped and the earth collapsed from the void. Deltona had a few show up and once in a while you hear of them but they really are few and far between. When they do show up they raely happen under a house, then ffor it to be the one house you would choose... pretty unlikely. That said if you are still unsatisfied then when you select a home simply opt for a geological survey and they can give you an idea of your risk factor.
I know of a realtor acquaintance of mine that has a home in the Lake Davis area downtown and her home is above a large sinkhole. The home has sat there for over 50 years but who knows tomorrow may be her day. She had a survey done and they were talking about cashing out her insurance policy and calling it a day for the home. I havent heard any updates but I suspect she is still there. 4 years after the discovery. So even if you know they are there doesnt mean it will happen in your lifetime. If I were dealing with a client in this area I would encourage the geoligist to take a look. otherwise I generally don't think about it.
