I know Com - it was so bad - and super disgusting, but I couldn't think of anything else to do. Angry that I lowered myself though.

I love MidWesterners. I'm married to one!

Also, my best friend in Tennessee is from Ohio.

It's not MidWesterners. It's the people that gravitate to swFlorida. It's filled with a lot of old, retired auto plant workers. They are very pushy and act entitiled. I often wondered if that was the reason. It just may have been their lifestyle. Who knows.

I once talked to a man at K-Mart. He was nice to me but he said he couldn't believe the level of customer service that he received at the K-Mart. I told him how much they were paid and he looked like he was going to fall over. He looked visibly stunned. I sometimes wonder if they don't realize that not everyone gets paid like that or has those benefits.

I have to admit that my dad is a retired union worker from the northeast and he will absolutely make a waitress' life pure hell and then not tip. Maybe it's union workers. Maybe not. I just don't know.

And, no, I'm not against unions. And unfortunately, there aren't going to be many well-paying factory jobs left in the country. Maybe, in 20 years swFlorida will be filled with friendly people? Broke friendly people.

I'm a good tipper, when I'm taken care of. My mother was a watress most of her life so, I tend to treat them very well. Their job is a crappy one and to have someone be unbelievably difficult just for the sake of doing so is just crazy to me.

On the flip side, just because you make 7$ an hour does not mean you have to be crabby. That is they job you chose not me you - this is in general. I think people do need a higher work ethic in general! I don't think that gives customers a free pass to be jerks, but do your job accordingly. Don't as a sales person or cashier go out of your way to make the customers life more difficult. It is a lose/lose situation. IMO.

Hiknapster - I'm married to a midwesterner too - my hubby is from Indiana. You know, when we lived in Sarasota the first time (1981-1997) there were a LOT more rude and cranky people here from wherever, and that included the retail workers (even young ones) at stores, banks, you-name-it.

Fast forward to today, and I feel that the whole Sarasota/Bradenton area has transformed. There are a lot of transplants here from a lot of different states now, not just the midwest, and people seem happy and very friendly. More younger ones now, too. And even though poor Bradenton gets a bad rap on these forums for crime and whatnot, their slogan is "the friendly city" and I have found that to be overwhelmingly true. It is a mix of midwestern and southern hospitality, and I have found it on every level from the building inspector, to the Brighthouse team who installed our cable (4 guys, even the manager, late at night!), the veterinary office, the friendly help at my local Publix grocery, and I could go on and on. I can't believe how helpful some of the service people here are and how they go out of their way to do things for me - like the lady mail carrier who went down to the post office when it was closed (late Sat) to retrieve a registered letter for me, and drop it off on her way home after work!

I am guessing the demographics in certain areas like Miami and Orlando (can't speak for further down SW Fl like Naples or Ft. Myers) have changed, but not for the better judging by reading these forums. But just wanted to post that friendliness, neighborliness, happiness does exist here and in some other areas of Florida. I found Lakeland to be the same as well.

Whoops. I should have been more specific. I always think of swFlorida as being North Fort Myers all the way down to Marco and Immokalee. I suppose that's not true, though.

Anyway, I didn't mean Sarasota or Bradenton. I've never lived there. It is my understanding that it is a completely different demographic. Either way, it is not what I meant. My bad.

It's a vicious circle. It's like asking what comes first, the chicken or the egg. The mean customer or the mean service rep? You can make your head hurt trying to figure that one out. Or you can live in The Real South and do yourself a favor.

I am still trying to figure out why people are responding to a post that is almost four years old ( myself included ) .... any how no South Florida is not part of the "South " you have to go North of Ocala to be in the
"South " again . Northern Florida including Jacksoville and the panhandle are the deep south .

Yeahhhhh, I'd have to agree - "New York is it's own animal" alright.
Man, that guy should know better than to look at anything he doesn't own while he walks down the street. What nerve!
