Insurance in general is out of control in Florida but I didn't know the rest of the state was as bad as SoFla, I can say for a fact in SoFla it is insanly expensive. We left 2 years ago and Geico just raised our rates to over $300/month for two average cars, adult drivers, perfect record with no accidents or etc, lived in a upscale area/community, gated in a 2 car garage.

Moved to San Diego County and did the changes with Geico, my rate dropped down to $80/month and has not really moved up more than a few dollars since moving here.

Figure in FL's low wages, that sucking sound coming out of your wallet for insurance in general is quite loud.

Between this post in October and our renewal this April, our rates went up 16%. We're now paying $1600 / 6 months for three 30+ drivers with clean records (we get the discounts) on 2 old < $5k cars without collision (they'd just total it for anything anyway). We have the minimum PIP and decent body / property liability but that's it. This is absolutely crazy.

Mine went up 10%. Been shopping around but I can't find anything cheaper. Used to be you could switch carriers to get a better rate but not anymore.

More densely congested areas are going to have higher rates, also it varies from one zip code to another in the same town sometimes.

But I noticed it went up several years before the OP mentions..

Moving to FL in 2 weeks. My Insurance for 2 cars is the same as in TN and about the same as it was in CA, roughly $80.00 per car per month and higher than normal coverage. Depends also on where you live. SE FL has problems and you pay to live there.

I live in the TB area so not paying up for SE FL. Like I said, the cost is crazy down here. I understand the various reasons but it still blows my mind that it costs about double what the rates in the DC area are and the odds of having a major claim here are so much lower.

Florida has by far the highest numbers of uninsured drivers in the US (nearly 27%) and that number continues to rise, and with it premiums for those do carry coverage. https://www.iii.org/fact-statistic/f...ured-motorists

Car accidents are like winning the lottery, but better odds. Car accidents are a very popular way for people to make money. You so much as touch someone's bumper they will run to the hospital, rack up $100,000 in medical bills, then extort the money from the insurance companies.

The insurance companies are being fleeced by accident "victims" claiming fake injuries and the lawyers who represent them. Think about that the next time you sit on a jury and are being asked to award someone hundreds of thousands of dollars for car accident "injuries".

The insurance companies are being victimized, and they have to recover their costs somehow. Hence we pay higher premiums.

By the way, don't be the idiot who has a $1 million policy. The higher your policy, the higher the medical bills racked up by the other person involved in the accident. In other words, if you get into an accident and the other driver sues and their attorney finds out you have a fat insurance policy, it's like they won the lottery. They will rack up huge medical bills and extort the money from your insurance company.

This is not just Florida. This is everywhere. The United States of Fraud.
