My wife and I just moved to Florida from out of state to the Clearwater area a couple of weeks ago. We just started renting a house and I was wondering what the norm was for preventative pest control / maintenance. I was wondering how often people on here do it and if they do it themselves or hire an exterminator.

We don't have any particular bug issues right now but I want to make sure we keep up with this as needed so we don't get any issues in the future.

Most pest control companies have a maintenance plan where they treat the outside and inside and put some glue things in all the cabinets, then for $25-30 per month they come out every two months to treat the outside. If any bugs get inside the home in between treatments, you can call them and they come out for free.

When I first bought my house, it was like that movie Joe's Apartment the first night. Once it started getting dark I couldn't go into a room without seeing something scurrying around. I was on the phone the next morning. They came out once a month for the first four months and then switched to bimonthly after that.

Five years later, we are still on the bimonthly. I'm happy with it. They spray outside only and use bait gels and other non-hazardous stuff inside the house.

I agree with bmw335xi, get on a maintenance plan and stick too it, even if there's no bugs. It was the best investment I made when I lived in Florida. Amazing the sort of creatures that can get into your home down there.

We always sprayed outside up the wall about 3 feet every 3 months and never had bugs inside.

Welcome to Florida,

Definitely need pest control on a routine basis in Florida. Ours comes out every 3 months inside and out, then we do a special spray outside for fire ants and mosquitoes when needed.
