My wife loves the Placid Lakes area, which is technically not in the city limits of Lake Placid. I'm pretty happy with it too, since we love nature and the outdoors. But I am looking more at Sebring, Florida, about 20 minutes north of Lake Placid because there are far more shopping and eating places there. I will be flying down in June myself to visit friends and investigate Sebring too. I wish we could afford something along the ocean or gulf, like in Naples, but we can't. But at least we can drive there!

Highlands County deputy shot Sunday night dies from his injuries

The incident where an old man killed a cop was in the Lake Plaid area, but it should be an isolated case.

It was in Placid Lakes which is not in the Town of Lake Placid, it is in unincorporated Highlands County. Lake Placid is a very safe Town with an excellent, community-oriented police force.

We have had a condo there since 2012. Lake Placid is a hidden gem. Only busy street is Route 27 which bisects the town. Otherwise minimal traffic. Many many types of birds, turtles, frogs, lizards and one alligator (that I know of) in our lake. Archbold Nature Center is just south of town with lots of wildlife. My husband catches bass and pan fish in the lake. I don't know what the crime stats are, but we feel very safe... rarely see Police cars or hear sirens. New Publix and Bealls in town. Restaurants ARE somewhat lacking, but there is a Golden Corral and a neighborhood restaurant called Bo David's that is great. A 25 minute drive to Sebring gets you lots of restaurant choices. Overall a slow-moving peaceful very pleasant town. Many friendly folks in our condos...mostly snowbirds. We love it!

Cool Lake Placid or?

My husband and I are looking into the Lake Placid area (including nearby Sebring) as a possible site for re-location. I am a retired teacher and he is a retired Florida Park ranger. If anyone can tell me a good realtor to contact, I would be interested. We are looking to rent until we decide if it's truly the place we want to be.

Could also use info about the Bartow-Lithia-Plant City area. Just another possibility...

Also need information on availability of good medical care and especially places that take United Health.

Thanks.

We are relocating to the Placid Lakes area, and are using Eve Brock of Lake and Land Realty. So far they have been very impressive.

Lake and Land Realty of Highlands, Inc.

Thanks. Have some medical problems right now that will delay a trip up there at present, but in a month or so we'll be contacting her. We rode out Hurricane Irma up there--it has an elevation of 135 ft above sea level. Just a lot of wind and rain but NO FLOODING. That's what we're looking for....

I know this thread is 3 years old, but how did all the re-locations go to Lake Placid / Placid lakes / Sebring?
Is it what you expected?

Hope all your health issues have been resolved... I am investigating the area as well from out of state... LOL, I have about a 2 year window to pursue relocation

Thanks Michael

What has turned your focus to that area? Just asking because it's not unlike other areas you might also find appealing in 2023-2024.

I'll guess its:

1) low cost

2) decent healthcare

3) low crime

4) lot of other seniors to socialize with

5) lots of churches to choose from

6) not as crowded as other parts of FLA near the coasts

7) conservative politically by a ratio of 2:1
